Noah Schnapp's Mind Flayer revelation

Fans think that Noah Schnapp may have given away the plot for season five, during an interview on the Hot Ones video podcast.

During the episode, which saw the Stranger Things cast—Noah, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, and Gaten Matarazzo—battling it out over spicy wings, things got a little chaotic when Noah appeared to let a plot detail slip.

Mid-challenge, Noah tried to recap the show from season to season and may have accidentally dropped a huge spoiler.

Fans have been debating whether Vecna or the Mind Flayer is the true big villain. Many believe it's Vecna since he shaped the Mind Flayer into the iconic spider form in season four. But the stage show The First Shadow suggests the opposite—that the Mind Flayer actually gave Vecna his powers and has been pulling the strings all along.

During the interview, Noah casually said the Mind flayer is controlling Vecna—a detail that could change everything.

Whether it was a slip of the tongue or a major reveal, the clip has now been removed from the Hot Ones video leading many to believe that it is indeed a spoiler. The clip is still doing the rounds on X (formerly Twitter) and fans have had a lot to say...

"They cut out the part in the hot wings video where noah says that will built the tunnels and the mind flayer controls vecna. GUYS," one wrote alongside a gif of a person in a shock.

"HELPPP I did catch him saying the Mind Flayer but in the video and little alarm bells went off in my head," another wrote.

"Did you see Finn's face when he said it in the full clip?" a third said alongside a crying-laughing emoji.

In an interview with Variety, the Duffer brothers confirmed that how connected Vecna and the Mind Flayer really are is "a question that will be answered in the final episode," airing on New Year's Eve.

Returning characters: Barb is back

Shannon Purser's beloved character Barb was snatched by the Demogorgon far too soon all the way back in season one, and her loss has lingered ever since.

Now, the Duffers have revealed Time that Barb’s body will appear in the second volume of season five, likely as part of Vecna’s hive.

"The one note that we consistently got back was, 'What about Barb?' And we're like, 'It's a show about Will,'" Ross said.

"Netflix kept harassing us about it," Matt added. "And it turns out they were right."

"We neglected her, and as such, Hawkins neglected her, and it made her that much more famous," Ross said.

It’s not a full comeback, but it hints at a much deeper link between Vecna’s victims - and fans may finally learn the truth in the final season.

Vecna's backstory

The Duffers have confirmed that we'll see more of Vecna’s memories in volume two. They told Variety that Vecna’s backstory is essentially this season’s "new Russia storyline," which saw Hopper isolated from the rest of the group in his own storyline. This time it will involve Holly and Max.

Matt said: "That's what we call our new Russia storyline, because it’s very few characters. They’re kind of isolated off on their own, Max and Holly. We’re very happy with how it integrates with the other storylines."

Between Stranger Things four and five, the franchise expanded with a stage prequel, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, exploring Henry Creel’s past, how he gained his powers, and his connections to key characters in the 1950s.

Parts of the play already appear in Stranger Things season five, volume one, as Max relives moments from Henry’s school days and discovers the cave. And "there’s more overlap with the play," according to Matt.

"When we were working on the play with Kate Trefry, we had Henry’s backstory worked out. There was always a balance that we had to find in terms of how much we were going to put in the play. [The director] Stephen [Daldry] and [the produce] Sonia [Friedman] were always pushing for more and we were pushing back and saying, 'Well, we have to wait to reveal that in the show.' You’ll see, especially as you reach the final episode, there’s more overlap with the play," he told Variety.

"Time itself unravelling"

This one might be more of a hint than a full on spoiler, but there's been a fan theory going around about how time will play a major role in the final episodes.

Bbased on the synopsis, which states "time itself unravelling" and Max’s experiences in Vecna’s mind prison, it's looking like we could see the full extent of this in the new episodes.
