As the release of Scheana Shay’s memoir, My Good Side, approaches, she’s become an open book about all aspects of her life. In a recent Us Weekly cover story, the reality TV personality got candid about her husband, Brock Davies, and his “strained relationship” with his older children from a previous marriage. During the interview, she shared details about an unaired conversation between herself and Katie Maloney about Brock’s family dynamic on Vanderpump Rules season 9.
“I sat in her living room, we had some wine, and she was like, ‘I just don’t understand how you could be okay with Brock leaving his family,’” Scheana told Us Weekly. According to the “Good as Gold” singer, her husband’s story draws parallels to her own life, as she developed a strong bond with her stepdad because her estranged biological father left when she was young.
“And I said, ‘It is more complicated than that,’” she continued. “‘You don’t understand all of the nuances and everything that was going on at that time. They have a very present stepfather in their life and just like I was raised by my stepfather—who is my dad, I’ve never even liked referring to him as my stepdad—I understood.’” Scheana added that she hesitated to even bring up her biological dad while filming Vanderpump Rules because she didn’t want to invalidate how her stepdad, Ron, raised her.
“I didn’t want his friends at work who watched the show to question, like, ‘Wait, you’re not her real dad?’ No, he is my real dad. He may not be my biological father, but he is my real dad,” she added.
Scheana now has a “great relationship” with her biological dad, Raul, and talks to him every week. Because of this journey, she empathizes with Brock’s children, who live in Australia with their mom.
“My biological father took a step back because that was what was best for me. And as much as people want to just see Brock as a man who abandoned his family—I know that’s how it looks from the outside—he was 19 and 20 when he had kids. Staying in a toxic relationship wasn’t going to be what was best for them,” Scheana told Us Weekly.
The Bravo star “genuinely hopes” that his kids can build a relationship with Brock in the same way she did with Raul and is open to blending their family with their 4-year-old daughter, Summer.
“His kids are now 12 and 13—it’s going to be up to them if they choose to have us in their lives,” Scheana added. “We are here with open arms and an open door if they’re ever ready for that.”
Speaking of Brock: Scheana also broke her silence about Brock cheating on her while she was pregnant. “It really felt like I got my karma,” she told Us Weekly, referring to her own affair with Eddie Cibrian while he was married to Brandi Glanville. “Did I deserve for [Brock to cheat on me]? No, but I told myself that I did.”
Luckily, it seems she and Brock are doing just fine and working things out in therapy. “I have a voice, and I want to use it,” she concluded. “I am extremely proud of the woman I’ve become. I am not that 21-year-old girl chasing boys around clubs anymore.”
