His charisma is so strong, it’s almost tangible. He can make you laugh till you struggle to breathe, and he’s so charming that all your friends instantly adore him. But then weeks or months later, he flips. It’s like he has a whole new personality, complete with a new collection of interests…and it doesn’t include you. Meet the enticing, confusing, and rage-inducing Gemini man.
Cosmo cover star Olivia Rodrigo chronicles the start of a romance with just such a Gemini man in her new single, “drop dead.” After describing the beginning of a whirlwind romance—late nights talking about anything and everything before making out in the bathroom line at a bar—she brings astrological compatibility into the bridge: “Pisces and a Gemini / But I think we might go really nice together / If you let me stay the night / Well, I think I might just have to stay forever.”
Notice the “but” here—she didn’t sing “and I think we might go really nice together.” The “but” makes clear what astrologers already know: Pisces and Gemini do not actually go really nice together. In fact, they’re pretty incompatible because their signs make a tense 90-degree square aspect with each other in the zodiac, a connection associated with harsh, tense energy and conflict as well as sexual tension (“maybe we could make-makeout / Clothes off and fall to the ground,” as Olivia puts it).
As the album title, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, tells us, there’s always a “but” when it comes to a Gemini man. The rest of the album seems poised to chronicle the fall that comes after those whirlwind early days of a Gemini-fueled romance. (Fans speculate that it’s inspired by Olivia’s rumored breakup with her Gemini ex Louis Partridge, a breakup Cosmo predicted in the first edition of Cosmo’s Shiposcopes franchise, blaming chaotic Uranus for a rocky 2025.)
Just days after “drop dead” was released, another pop star came forward as a hater of Gemini men: Billie Eilish. In an Ask Me Anything interview with Elle, she said, “I met a Gemini man and I dated his ass and then I believed in astrology. Since then, no matter what, without a doubt, I can recognize a Gemini from a mile away.” She added, “Girl Geminis? Amazing, [they’re the] life of the party, my favorite people in the world. Male Geminis? Go to hell.” As a Sagittarius, Billie Eilish is Gemini’s opposite sign, a connection with push-and-pull energy that’s either great or really, really bad. So she knows ball on this, trust.
So what exactly makes Geminis so terrible? Let’s break it down. They’re an Air sign, which makes them intelligent, witty, and outgoing. But it also makes them flaky, inconsistent, and indecisive. Emotionally, they tend to stay on the surface rather than cultivate a deeper bond. You have a lot of fun when you’re around them, but they’re not someone you can rely on.
Geminis are also mutable signs, meaning that they were born as one season is ending and the next one is ready to begin (for Gemini, it’s when spring is turning into summer). This trait makes them flexible, open-minded, and philosophical. They don’t just adapt to change; they crave it. This is where mutability can be a bad thing in a romantic partner: Geminis love variety and are not exactly the type to be happy in a stable, long-term relationship unless that person is definitely the one.
Let’s look into it from another angle though. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the fastest-moving planet that rules intelligence, communication, and technology. Again, this makes Gemini a lot of fun to be around but also explains why they’re so inconsistent. They’re always moving on to the next best thing. Gemini is represented by the twins, and haters say this is appropriate because Geminis are so two-faced. The haters have a point—I cannot disagree there.
Personally, I’ve never gone on more than a few dates with a Gemini man (my stability-craving Scorpio sun needs someone a little more consistent), but I’ve seen plenty of friends be emotionally wrecked by the experience of falling for one. And that’s exactly what makes Gemini men so dangerous: At first, they’re charming, witty, and flirtatious, seeming like an angel on the walls of Versailles. But then, eventually, you realize that they’re actually a devil. This honeymoon stage might explain exactly why Olivia Rodrigo has dated three different Gemini men. We’re just happy we get to listen to the music they inspire. Hey, I guess Gemini men are good for something?
