Ever been totally blindsided by a breakup, absolutely wracking your brain to figure out where things went wrong? Yeah, same. Enter: Texts From My Ex, an AI-based platform that evaluates, well, texts from your ex to try to find those answers for you.

Because letting an algorithm read your entire text history in intimate detail sounds, uh, scary as hell, I graciously went ahead and threw the remains of my own ex-relationship to the AI wolves to test it out for ya. You’re welcome! Here’s how it all went down.

What ‘Texts From My Ex’ Does

Just as its name implies, the free online platform relies on an AI-powered algorithm, trained on large-language models, to analyze texts between you and a former romantic partner. Brave users can upload entire conversations from iMessage or WhatsApp, and Texts From My Ex will reply with what went wrong. The platform will also assign you and your ex an overall compatibility rating based on factors like communication, sexiness, “cute moments,” and (somewhat brutally but also maybe the honesty we need?) “why it will never work.”

What ‘Texts From My Ex’ Is Like

Luckily for me, I have plenty of ex-boyfriends, so all I had to do was upload my chat history with one of them from a few years back (yes, I still have this, because receipts, baby). I braced myself for some hard truths, and within minutes, I got a full report. This particular ex and I scored a lukewarm, if admittedly accurate, compatibility of 60 percent. We ranked highest in “attachment style”—a “secure” one, per Texts From My Ex, although our “casual and ongoing chats” hinted that my “almost one-sided concern for [my ex’s name] indicates a subtle anxious attachment.” Personally, I identify as having avoidant attachment issues, but, fine, I get it: I’m the problem, it’s me. (Although I refuse to take sole credit for our 4 out of 10 sexiness rating, ouch.)

While I don’t necessarily disagree with the platform’s analysis, the conversation excerpts it used to defend its scoring felt odd. For one thing, although I’d fed it the entirety of my text history from a one-year relationship, it spat back examples from only the last month or so. This led me to suspect that—much like the ex in question, who listened to only about 30 percent of what I had to say—Texts From My Ex didn’t actually analyze all of my data. Also this: the reason for that 4/10 sexiness score? A message in which I complained that “my tits still hurt” after changing up my birth control. Per the platform, this was proof our sexting “focuses more on health problems than seduction.” Um, I promise plenty of actually steamy convos went down that year!

    What’s in It for You?

Texts From My Ex is super easy to use with very fast results. Will its insights help you finally unravel your relationship’s demise or give you the closure you’ve been searching for? Maybe, maybe not. Its algorithm doesn’t seem to have quite yet mastered how human conversations work, so I’d think of it as more of a fun toy than a tool—for now, at least. The platform will soon launch a newer version, based on (what else?) more advanced AI, in an app called Amori. Its creators tell me this 2.0 product won’t be limited to conversations among exes—it will be able to take the temperature of any current or potential relationships too.
