How to Do the Bridge Sex Position

Looking for a more intense finish? Look no further.

Some sex positions are for long kisses, slow, sexy grinding, or full-body cuddles. But the bridge sex position is not that. The bridge is your big finish move—perfect for when you crave intensity, depth, and the kind of orgasm where your brain briefly leaves your body. Use it like wasabi: in small, strategic doses when you need an intense blast of “omfg” during penetrative sex.

In the bridge position, the receiving partner lifts their hips off the bed—à la the bridge position in yoga—creating a lifted arch for ultra-deep, passionate thrusting. Not only does this give the pretty clear mating signal of, “I need more of you now,” but it’s also great for direct stimulation where you need it.

“It allows for deep penetration and internal stimulation and makes it easy to manually stimulate the receiving partner’s clitoris or penis,” says sex therapist Shannon Chavez. “It’s also great for people with small penises or partners with vastly different heights.”

And if you like to incorporate toys, the bridge position makes it easy to add in a vibrator, a couples toy, or a cock ring. If you want to make it more comfortable, change the surface. “The bridge is a wonderful position for deep penetration, but sometimes the softness of a bed isn’t the best place for it,” says sex therapist Nikki Coleman, PhD. Try spicing things up by switching locations,” A couch, table, countertop, or the edge of the bed can offer more support and leverage.

One more thing to note: The bridge position will work your core. Thighs and abs will be engaged. That’s where the “small doses” part comes in. If the position is hard to sustain for a super long time, you can save it for the grand finale, or try one of the variations below.

The Classic Bridge

How To Do It: The receiver lies on their back keeping their shoulders on the bed and raising their hips with their knees spread about hip distance apart. The receiver keeps their weight on their feet and shoulders while their partner kneels between their legs to penetrate.

Pros: Deep penetration and excellent visuals.

Cons: Can be hard to maintain for a long time. Save it for a dramatic finish.

Switch It Up: The giver can use their hand to stroke the receiver.

Make It Hotter: “Use a stimulating lubricant beforehand to increase the intensity of sensations,” says Chavez.

The Suspension Bridge

How To Do It: The receiver lies on their back on a sturdy coffee table. The giver kneels to enter.

Pros: The main drawback to the bridge is holding the position. Here, problem solved!

Cons: Tables can be hard for extended sessions. Prioritize comfort by putting down a lush (and washable) blanket first.

Switch It Up: The giver can put their feet on the ground, then up over their partner’s shoulder to hit different angles.

Make It Hotter: Both of you will have your hands free to hold a bullet, wand, or clit suction vibrator.

The Pillow Bridge

How To Do It: The receiver lies on their back with a large sex wedge or generous stack of pillows under their hips. The giver kneels to enter.

Pros: “Pillows under the bottom of the receiving partner elevate the hips and enhance pressure, friction, and sensation to increase their pleasure potential,” says Chavez. Plus, it’s easier to hold the position for a longer time with some support under the hips.

Cons: The pillows are doing a lot lifting here, so you need to make sure you have a good-sized sex wedge or a pile of firm pillows.

Switch It Up: Try undulating the hips. “Both partners can focus more on rolling their hips together in rhythm than thrusting,” says Coleman.

Make It Hotter: Try it with a cock ring or wearable couples toy.

The Uncovered Bridge

How To Do It: Try a non-penetrative, outercourse version. Assume the bridge position, but instead of penetrating, the giver slides their penis or strap-on over the surface of the vulva as they thrust.

Pros: This is good if you’re anti-period sex or not into penetration for whatever reason. Plus, the penis/strap-on will provide much more direct clit stim than the penetrative version.

Cons: For givers with penises, this might not provide enough stimulation. The receiver can lube up their hand and wrap it around their partner’s penis for extra stim.

Switch It Up: The giver can mix it up by holding onto their penis/strap-on and guiding the head to make circles around their partner’s clit or swipe their penis from side to side across the vulva.

Make It Hotter: Try a mixed version with a few internal thrusts followed by a few external ones.

The Oral Arc

How To Do It: When the receiver is nearing orgasm, they lift their hips into the bridge position. The receiver kneels between their legs to service them orally.

Pros: A whole new angle on oral that lets the receiver press their hips up for more.

Cons: It can be hard for the receiver to hold the position as they’re shuddering though an orgasm.

Switch It Up: Add an extra hand to the oral. If the receiver has a vagina, slide a finger inside. If they have a penis, fondle their balls or slide a lubed finger in their ass.

Make It Hotter: Mix hands, mouth and/or toys. A clit suction toy plus a finger inside the vagina? Vibrating butt plug plus stroking? Up to you.

The Cross

How To Do It: Get in the regular bridge position, but instead of having the giver hold the receiver’s hips for stability, the receiver wraps their legs around their partner’s hips.

Pros: Takes some of the hoisting responsibilities away from the receiver, plus even deeper penetration.

Cons: This might not be achievable for some people. Totally okay to move along.

Switch It Up: For a more athletic version, the receiver can raise themselves on their hands. Just be careful with any super hard thrusting.

Make It Hotter: This one feels extra animalistic, so lean into the primal play aspects with loud moans, grunts, or whatever primitive sounds you feel like making.

The Lazy Bridge

How To Do It: The receiving partner lies with their hips at the edge of a counter or dining table with their legs hanging over the edge. The penetrating partner stands up and faces their partner to lift their legs toward their hips while thrusting.

Pros: Not interested in core engagement? This is for you. Same deep penetration, minus the ab workout.

Cons: Your heights might not quite line up. Try it on a higher or lower surface, like a bed.

Switch It Up: Make it a bit more romantic by holding hands and gazing at each other.

Make It Hotter: Use a clitoral vibrator for max pleasure.
