Want to get really close to your partner? Putting your mouths on each other’s genitals should do the trick. “Oral sex is one of the most intimate sex acts,” says sexologist Diane Mueller, host of the Libido Lounge podcast. “It is not just about the pleasure, but the vulnerability and generosity involved in the act. It can provide some of the most intense pleasure possible.”

In addition to the intimacy, oral sex can also be more likely to result in orgasm for some, especially if you’re part of the large majority of people with vaginas who depend on clitoral stimulation to cum. “For vulva owners, oral can often lead to more consistent and intense orgasms than penetration,” says Nikki Coleman, PhD, a licensed psychologist and sex positive therapist. Mouths (especially when coupled with toys and/or fingers) can provide exactly the kind of targeted stimulation a vulva might need.

Oral is also a more versatile sex act than you may think; there are literally so many ways to do it, plus tons of different tips, tricks, and twists to mix things up. Below, 10 oral sex positions that will help you broaden your oral horizons.

1

Sideways Oral

How To Do It: Try theKivin Method, a type of sideway oral. The receiver lies on their back with one leg lifted. The giver approaches from the side so they can slide their mouth and tongue back and forth over the clitoral hood.

Pros: This little adjustment changes everything. “The sideways position for vulva owners can help to access parts of the vulva that are more difficult to access in other positions,” says Mueller.

Cons: Can be tricky to get the right angle of perpendicular access. If one side isn’t quite working out, try the other side.

Switch It Up: A finger slid into the vagina will make this even better.

Make It Hotter: The giver can gently pinch the clitoris to raise it for more contact with their mouth.

The Face Time

How To Do It: The giver sits with their legs in front of them. The receiver straddles their partner and presses their groin against their partner’s mouth.

Pros: Has the advantages of face sitting/face fucking—the receiver gets lots of control—but less of the sitting part.

Cons: Requires a bit of thigh strength. If things get shaky, the receiver can hold onto to a headboard or their partner’s shoulders.

Switch It Up: The receiver can press against their partner or lean in and let their partner grab their ass and take over.

Make It Hotter: The giver can stroke themselves or run their hands up their partner’s body.

The Saddle Straddle

How To Do It: The giver lies on their back. The receiver basically mounts their partner’s face for a classic face f*ck.

Pros: Complete control for the person on top, plus it has a bit of a Dom/sub vibe that you can play with-- or not.

Cons: Can feel overwhelming for the person on the bottom. Have a safe word or, if their mouth is preoccupied, a safe gesture to indicate that their partner needs to back off.

Switch It Up: Also works with the giver sitting back against a headboard and the receiver kneeling against their face.

Make It Hotter: If the person on top has a penis, the giver can add their hands, twisting up and down the shaft and licking the area around the head.

The Peace Out

How To Do It: A vulva-having receiver takes a seat and the giver settles comfortably between their legs. The giver places two fingers on either side of the receiver’s clit and makes a little scissor motion while gently licking or sucking the tip of the clitoris.

Pros: More direct clit stimulation.“It kind of isolates the clitoris from the rest of the body and really pinpoints that pleasure,” says sex therapist Susan Block.

Cons: Some clits don’t like direct stimulation. Much better for all if the giver keeps close communication with their partner, observing their reaction and checking that all is well.

Switch It Up: A finger inside the vagina is an excellent accompaniment.

Make It Hotter: If the receiver wants even more, add a finger in the vagina and a thumb or plug in the butt.

All Hail the Queen

How To Do It: The receiver lies on their back. The giver straddles their head.

Pros: The receiver has complete control of how close they want to be to their partner’s mouth. Plus it’s a power move to sit on someone’s face.

Cons: Face-sitting can be a lot for the person on the bottom. The giver should hold themselves up so they’re in a hover rather and a full sit.

Switch It Up: If the receiver has a penis, the angle doesn’t quite work. If they lean forward onto their hand, it will.

Make It Hotter: The giver can grab their partner’s ass and pull them closer, letting them know how much they’re into it.

Doggy Does Oral

How To Do It: The receiver gets on their knees and elbows. The giver gets on their knees behind.

Pros: The receiver can control the intensity and the angle by adjusting their hips. And it’s easy to switch to rimming, if that’s something you’re both into.

Cons: If rimming isn’t something you’re both into, this might not be a first choice since it’s pretty butt-centric.

Switch It Up: The giver can lube up their hand and cup their partner’s genitals for a lubey reacharound.

Make It Hotter: Have the receiver issue requests to their partner.

So-fa So Good

Two figures interacting on a mat with a floral pattern.

How To Do It: One person lies upside down on the couch, with their back and head on the seat and their legs draped over the back. The other person kneels over their partner’s face, facing the back of the couch. Bend towards each other for couch-bound 69.

Pros: Mutually assured destruction.

Cons: So much multi-tasking. “While the 69 position can be hot, many people find that oral sex works better when one person can fully give and the other person can focus. Consider taking turns,” suggests Mueller.

Switch It Up: Try it this way for a while, then switch places.

Make It Hotter: For something more sustainable for longer sessions, switch to something where you can lie on your sides, she says.

The Leg Up

Couple in an intimate pose on a surface.

How To Do It: A receiver with a vulva lies on their back with legs spread. The giver sits between their legs, bending down and lifting their partner’s butt. The receiver drapes one leg over their partner’s shoulder.

Pros: People with vulvas may have one side that’s more sensitive than the other and this puts the focus on the “good” side.

Cons: Hoisting a partner by the ass is hot, but kinda hard. Grab some pillows and let them do the work.

Switch It Up: Try the other legs up and find out how the other side feels.

Make It Hotter: The giver can experiment with different licks and sucks, like licking figure eights up and down the side of their partner’s vulva. “Making oral sex a fun and exhilarating experience hinges on creativity, playfulness, and exploration,” says sex expert Niki Davis-Fainbloom.

The Sidecar

How To Do It: The receiver leans back on their hands, with a knee up. The giver lies on their side between their partner’s legs.

Pros: Different angles and a good position to shift to if the giver is getting a neck cramp.

Cons: The giver won’t have two hands free to assist in the oral. That bottom hand slides nicely under their partner for an ass squeeze.

Switch It Up: Try lying on your sides facing each other, then have the giver slide down to groin level.

Make It Hotter: Watch your hot selves in the mirror.

The Spiderman

Two stylized human figures engaged in a massage.

How To Do It: The giver lies on their back with their head hanging off the edge. The giver stands by their head, leaning down with their hands on the bed.

Pros: Upside down oral!

Cons: Might not be the most comfortable. The receiver can climb all the way into bed for a 69ing version.

Switch It Up: The giver can pop in a wearable toy.

Make It Hotter: The receiver uses one hand to stroke or use a toy on their partner.
