Hi, hello, and welcome to Strap-On 101. Your first lesson: Strap-ons are a fab way to explore anal play and power dynamics—and ofc, they're great sex toys for lesbians and partners who both have vulvas. But both vaginal strap-on sex and anal strap-on sex (aka pegging) can be a lil intimidating for the non-initiated, which is why we're here to help ya find the best strap-on dildos, harnesses, and sets. Hope you're ready to strap in and strap on—and first up, let's talk a liiiittle more about what strap-on sex entails, and why you should give it a shot.

As sexologist Carol Queen, PhD, previously told Cosmo, "Strap-on play can be wonderfully sexy, a mind-blowing role reversal, a source of sexual self-esteem, and prostate play!" But because there are SO many strap-on toys and accessories out there, it's hard to know what will work best for you. Btw, when we say "strap-on," we're pretty much always referring to the toy itself—usually a dildo—while the harness is the thing you wear to attach the toy to your body. Luckily, many sets include both the strap-on and harness, so you don't have to buy them separately (though you can if you've already got a toy or harness that gets the job done).

Our top picks for the best strap-on dildos, harnesses, and sets of 2024:

From strapless strap-ons to full strap-on harness kits, here are all the best strap-on accessories you can buy for your boudoir—and read on for everything you need to know about strap-on sex.

  • Snug fit helps keep toys in place

Cons

Jock-style harnesses tend to be the most popular, but tbh, harness briefs are so underrated. Lovehoney Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs

Unisex Strap-On Harness Briefs

Pros

  • Budget-friendly but such still good quality
  • Much comfier than most jock-style harnesses

Cons

  • Size range is a bit limited
  • Can only fit dildos with a diameter of up to 1.5"

Coming in at just $35, this brief-style harness looks just like a regular ol' pair of panties...save for that stretchy lil O-ring in the front panel (and built-in pocket for a bullet vibe). These briefs have earned hundreds of five-star reviews for their comfort, stretch, and impressive holding power—and best of all, you can slide 'em right on without having to fiddle around with any straps.

  • Included: Harness
  • Harness size: S-2X

THE REVIEW: According to one tester, "I compared other strapless brands/styles that didn't seem as secure or well-made before I took a gamble on these. They are very comfortable to just wear, but also hold a dildo in place very nicely for hands-free fun. I also love that they are machine washable."

  • Kinda $$$ for a non-vibrating toy (but well worth the price, promise)

Wanna strap-on without the straps? Get yourself a harness-free wearable double dildo, like this cutie. Made with seamless, soft-touch silicone, this Red Dot Award-winner is beloved for its lightweight design, bendable shape, and four girth options. best beginner strapless strap-on

Lovehoney Wave Rider

Wave Rider

Pros

  • Rippled texture is a nice touch
  • Lightweight enough to keep in place without a struggle

Cons

  • Shaft girth may be too much for some to handle
  • Still requires pretty strong pelvic floor muscles

The problem with a lot of strapless strap-ons: They're too heavy to keep in place without the help of a harness. But that won't be a problem with this rippled bb. Unlike traditional double-ended dildos, this toy has a lightweight inner core, which makes it much easier to keep the bulb end inserted as ya play. Other notable features include the long, rippled shaft and adjustable hinge—and though this one doesn't vibrate, there is a vibing option.

  • Included: Dildo
  • Dildo length: 7" (6" insertable)
  • Dildo diameter: 1.43" with 1.35" bulb

THE REVIEW: "This has not disappointed," writes one reviewer. "It is lightweight, so it doesn’t tend to fall out like others I have used. It is adjustable, so that you can move it to a more comfortable position or to fit your body better. Overall, it is a great little buy and well worth the money for amount of orgasms we have had with it."

best vibrating strapless strap-on

Wet for Her Union Vibe 2.0

Union Vibe 2.0

Pros

  • Available in three girth options
  • Vibing power is so! strong!

Cons

  • Bulb may be a lil bit intimating in size for some
  • May need a harness for more intense play

Designed with vulvas in mind, the Union is super-soft and malleable, featuring an elongated shaft on one end and a comfy bulb for inserting inside the vagina on the other. It comes in three girth options, includes an internal wire to help you pose the shaft as you please, and comes with dual motors for double the vibin' pleasure.

  • Included: Dildo
  • Dildo length: 11.25" (5.9" insertable)
  • Dildo diameter: 1.06" for small, 1.38" for medium, 1.61" for large; bulb is 1.38" for small and medium and 1.45" for large

THE REVIEW: "I think the fact that the toys are made by lesbians for lesbians is a big part of why this double dildo is so perfect," one tester writes. "The shorter end stays in place very well, even when things get quite slippery. Both of us had to be a little slow removing it because it's a little larger, but it isn't uncomfortable to insert or to keep in. It's just the right size to stay put in pretty much all the positions you can think of and for as long as you want to use it."

So...what is a strap-on?

Generally speaking, a strap-on refers to any toy (typically a dildo) that you can wear with a harness in order to penetrate a partner. That toy can be phallic or non-phallic, vibrating or non-vibrating, big or small—it all depends on what you're into! Likewise, you can buy strap-on sets that include both a toy and a harness, or you can mix and match by purchasing harness-compatible dildos or dildo harnesses separately. Oh, and there are even strapless strap-ons (sometimes known as double-sided dildos or double-ended dildos) that can be worn with or without a harness for more ~options.~

How to choose the best strap-on

If you're totally new to strap-on sex, it's probs best to get a strap-on kit (ideally with a few different-sized dildos and O-rings!) so you have all the tools needed to get started. But whether you're shopping for a kit, a dildo, a harness, or a strapless strap-on, here are some things to keep in mind:

Consider the strap-on size

Just like with any insertable toy (looking at you, butt plugs), you don't wanna choose a dildo that's too long or girthy for you to use comfortably. As certified sex therapist Dulcinea Pitagora, PhD, LCSW, CST, previously told Cosmo, it's better to start small and then work your way up, 'cause no one wants to experience anal or vaginal tearing from a too-big toy. "You can get more pleasure from larger sizes when you're more aroused," they explained. Side note: If you're using a larger dildo that's over two inches in girth, you should probs opt for a sturdier harness. Speaking of which...

Choose the right harness

A jockstrap or jock-style harness is the most popular option for strap-ons, as most can be fully adjustable for a custom fit. However! Underwear-style harnesses (such as brief or boxer harnesses) are often softer and much more comfortable to wear, though they may not be able to handle larger toys with as much control as a traditional harness. Think about the dildo you'll be using and how you like to play before making your choice—or try both and see what you prefer!

Check out the O-ring

No matter what style you buy, every strap-on harness comes equipped with an O-ring, which is used to keep the toy or dildo in place. Some harnesses have elastic O-rings that can stretch to accommodate a variety of dildos, while others include multiple O-rings of different sizes that you can swap in and out. If you go the route of choosing your dildo and harness separately, be sure to check the size of the harness ring to make sure it's a good fit for your toy.
