Noah Cyrus has officially returned to music, and she’s sharing part of her story in her latest single.
The singer-songwriter wears her heart on her sleeve with her track, “Don’t Put It All on Me,” featuring indie-folk band Fleet Foxes. Her older brother Braison Cyrus cowrote the stunningly emotional ballad, which features lyrics that seemingly touch on the tension within her family.
“I can’t look away when I’m watching you move in slow motion / All waves with no ocean / I’m swallowed by the sea,” Noah sings. “You couldn’t be honest with me, but I know you tried to / But beauty will blind you / Don’t put it all on me.”
In a press release sent to Cosmopolitan, Noah revealed the inspiration behind the hauntingly beautiful ballad came from her family dynamic. “I have always been the observer in our family, and Braison wrote about how I tend to carry the weight of that on my shoulders,” she wrote in the statement.
The track’s release comes after Noah’s oldest brother, Trace Cyrus, called out Billy Ray Cyrus amid his performance at President Trump’s inauguration in January. “Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away,” Trace wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better.”
As for the intention behind her new release, the “July” singer wants “to offer fans a sense of comforting, peaceful nostalgia.”
“We all want to connect with our past while also being aware of the present moment. Music does that for me, and this new collection of songs was made with that in mind. I want to evoke that feeling of a comforting friend that a song can be—and allow us all to heal,” Noah, who is the youngest child of Tish and Billy Ray, continued in her statement.

[Verse 1]
By the look in your eye
I can tell that you’re no longer sleeping
But we’re still dreaming
Don’t put it all on me
By the end of the day
It’s clear that we’re both never leaving
But if we're still breathing
Don’t put it all on me
[Pre-Chorus]
The holy ghost, he only knows
As much as you’re willing to tell
Don’t mean to remind you
But sometimes, I like to
Just so you know how I felt
[Chorus]
Ooh
Don’t put it all on me
[Verse 2]
I can’t look away
When I’m watching you move in slow motion
All waves with no ocean
I’m swallowed by the sea
You couldn’t be honest with me
But I know you tried to
But beauty will blind you
Don’t put it all on me
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Some days, we might fall apart
But we’re never broken
The words that were spoken
Mean nothing to me
By the look in your eye
I can tell that you no longer need me
The feeling is freeing
Don’t put it all on me
[Chorus x2]
