Fans are feining for more from Lorde. It’s been almost four years since she dropped her glorious third album, Solar Power, and two years since she wrapped her tour and festival circuit in support of the album in August 2023. Aside from her remix of Charli XCX’s “girl, so confusing,” last year, the Grammy winner has kept things relatively quiet. Day-one fans know she occasionally shares heartfelt thoughts and revelations through her email newsletter. Even then, Lorde has been laying low.
But, something shifted slightly on Sunday, March 23, when the “Mood Ring” musician made a rare appearance in New York. According to footage posted by fan accounts on social media, Lorde was “accidentally spotted” by fans as she exited through the stage door of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater.
She was reportedly visiting her pal, Paul Mescal, during his performance in the revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. She quickly turned and walked away from a group of people who were waiting for Paul and the rest of the cast waited outside.
“Paul Mescal fans accidentally summoned a whole pop legend,” one fan wrote in response to the clip, while another added, “Imagine just tryna leave a building and becoming a trending topic.”
While Lorde’s public appearances have been kept to a minimum, she’s still been making music. Most recently, she hopped on “Kāhore He Manu E,” with New Zealand-based musician Marlon Williams for his first Māori language album, on February 25. She’s even in the music video for the song, where the pair is seen laying down the track in a recording studio. Before that, she joined the ranks of Miley Cyrus and Paramore as she contributed a cover of “Take Me to the River” for Everyone's Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense in collaboration with A24.
In a since-deleted Instagram post from December 2023, she seemingly teased that new music was on the way, writing, “We’re not CLOSE close you guys… i’m just getting so hype n needed to let u know. Start ur excitement on a low flame and bring it up to a gentle simmer .. we building stamina for this chapter.”
@ Lorde, can you let us know when to turn up the heat? Sincerely, eager fans who are waiting for more of your musical genius.
