What happens if you miss a pill or take it late?

The goal is to take your birth control pill at just about the same time every day so that the pill is most effective in preventing pregnancy. "In general, 'combination' birth control pills must be taken at the same time every day," Dr. Richardson explains. "For example, Lo Loestrin Fe is a daily birth control pill that prevents pregnancy with the lowest daily dose of estrogen available and is to be taken at the same time every day."

And hey, if you miss a pill, it happens. Just take it as soon as you remember, and pop the next pill the next time your regular phone alarm goes off, "even if this means you may take two pills in one day," Dr. Richardson says. If you're having sex during this whole missed pill ordeal, you may need a backup BC method, like condoms.

Ultimately, it's up to you to pick the birth control case that aligns best with your lifestyle. "If keeping your birth control pills in a case helps you remember to take it and keeps you in a routine, then that’s a great benefit. I also recommend setting an alarm, so if you can find an app that does that for you, even better," Dr. Richardson says.

If you're working with limited purse real estate, a tiny pill pack sleeve might be the one for you. But if you're a supplement queen and need more room for storage, go with one of the larger pillbox options (that will still fit in your travel toiletry bag, trust!).

"It’s generally best to keep birth control pills in a dry place at room temperature, away from extreme temperatures," Dr. Richardson says. That means don't leave your birth control case in a hot car (guilty!) or outside in the freezing cold either, so that the pills remain just as effective as they need to be.
