SOHO II Padded Chair

Pros

  • Great quality and style for the money
  • Allows you to recline back

Cons

  • Not everyone loves quality of vinyl
  • May be too narrow for some

For some mid-century modern vibes, go with this stylish option from Laura Davidson Furniture (which is a much more affordable alternative for the Herman Miller Eames chair). It features a supple leatherette seat and back cushions, a solid steel frame with a chrome-plated finish, and a super-strong aluminum base. And if faux leather isn't your thing, then you can also opt for fabric upholstery as well.

Glowing Customer Review: "It's pretty difficult to find the right office chair that blends ergonomics, mid-century modern appearance, and aesthetics. However, this chair hits that balance perfectly. It fits with modern furniture elsewhere in the room, it is comfortable and appealing, and it's a lot cheaper than the $1,000+ Herman Miller chair it resembles."

T25 Petite Office Chair

Pros

  • Designed with petite users in mind
  • Back recline is a nice touch

Cons

  • Armrests are fixed in place
  • Some wish seat depth and tilt were adjustable

My fellow shorties probs know all too well the pain of finding an office chair that lets you sit aaaaall the way back with your feet flat on the ground. That's why Sidiz made the T25, which features petite portions for shorter folks to sit comfortably. In addition to the lower seat and back, other fun features include the weight-activated tilting mechanism and breathable mesh seat back.

Glowing Customer Review: "I am short, so all regular-sized office chairs don’t fit my frame and never give me adequate support. With this chair, I am able to sit completely back with my feet touching the ground and my back supported, allowing me to sit comfortably all day without pain. The seat is slightly firm but comfortable, and I also enjoy that the back recline can be locked in place."

Total comfort, here you come!

Glowing Customer Review: "This chair is awesome! The mesh material is high-quality. The build quality is solid. And the lower back support is amazing! How to make office chairs more comfortable

linebreak

Here's the thing: Some ergonomic desk chairs require you to drop major coin, but if you plan on spending 40 hours a week in your seat, then a majorly comfortable chair is a must. As ProRehab clinical director Candace Morton tells Cosmo, "Ergonomic means relating to or designed for efficiency and comfort in the working environment." According to her, sitting in a non-ergonomic chair for hours every day can lead to bad posture and even reduce the natural inward curve of your lumbar spine, which affects its shock-absorbing powers. Not great!

And if you can't splurge on a top-of-the-line chair, you can make a less-than-ideal office chair more comfortable by adding a quality seat cushion or lumbar support pillow. Oh, and btw: No matter how comfortable your office chair is, you'll want to make sure you're sitting properly and taking plenty of breaks throughout the day. According to chiropractor Dr. Randi Jaffe, it's ideal if you sit "with both feet flat on the floor, avoiding crossing your legs, and trying to keep your spine straight without slouching or allowing the shoulders to roll forward or the neck to flex forward."

How to choose the most comfortable office chair

linebreak

Even if you only plan on using your desk chair for a few hours each day, you'll still want something with plenty of cushion and support, 'cause you deserve better than a rock-hard chair (even if it's a really, really chic one). A few things to keep in mind as you shop:

Find one you can adjust

Stationary chairs may work A-OK for you, and that's totally fine! But ideally, you'll wanna look for a chair with modifiable settings so you can best fit your posture. "Some adjustments can include the height of armrests, tilt of the seat, and modifiable lumbar curvature along with chair height," Morton explains. The more adjustable settings, the better, as you can really tailor your chair to your needs and body.

Look for plenty of support

Unsurprisingly, support and sturdiness are key when it comes to choosing an office chair. A budget-friendly chair may get the job done, but it probs won't have the longevity or durability of a chair made with heavy-duty materials. For maximum support, it's best to go with a seat that has a minimum of five legs for stability and a design that supports the lower, middle, and upper back.

Check out the measurements

Even if a chair is totally adjustable, it may not be a great fit for your body or your office space. Be sure to look into all the specs included with a chair, including the depth and width of the seat, the maximum weight capacity, and the height of the seat at its lowest and highest setting. That way, you can make sure the chair will work for both you and your desk.
