Once again, Marie Moreau is a fugitive. It seemed like she wouldn't be returning to Godolkin University at the end of Season 1, and here we are again. This time, after the Gen V Season 2 finale, she might be taking her nonconformist integrity to a larger stage. Here's what you need to know about that ending and how it connects toThe Boys.

As we learn in the penultimate episode, the new dean of Godolkin called "Cipher" has actually been a regular ol' man under powerful mind control all along. The individual controlling him is none other than the school's founder, Thomas Godolkin, played by Ethan Slater. This is the guy who's been in a hyperbaric chamber all season. He's the one who wants to eliminate super-humans that he deems weak and militarize the school. He's also the one in a romantic and sexual relationship with the super intelligent superhero and Vought International co-CEO Sister Sage from The Boys.

This is a YA series, after all, so there was some relationship drama to track in the finale as well as epic fights and loyalty switch-ups. Let's start with one major bummer. Jordan broke up with Marie. Maybe they can work things out in the future? Emma also kissed Greg, which is... complicated. About five seconds later she insisted she was very single. You do you, girl!

Why does Thomas look like that?

The Gen V season finale opens by confirming that Godolkin took "V-One," the variant of he Compound V that keeps you youthful and immortal, back in the late '60s. Other examples in the The Boys universe include Soldier Boy and Stormfront.

In the finale, he gathers groups of students together for "seminars" where he locks them in and uses mind control to train them. He also forced them to do a song-and-dance routine that would make Joaquin Pheonix's Joker jealous.

How do the kids break free?

Harper arrives with Marie and uses her own mind controlling abilities to control Thomas, and therefore everyone else. They manage to hold Thomas long enough so that some of the students can escape. Only Marie and her friends are left: Emma, Jordan, Sam, Greg, Cate, and Annabeth.

There's one brief scary moment where Thomas gains control of Marie and her blood power. He makes her torture her friends. There's a stereotypical villain speech and everything. Thankfully, it doesn't last long. Polarity returns and knocks Thomas out. Marie recovers, regains control of her powers and explodes Thomas. Not only does she save the day by doing this, but she demonstrates an impressive control over her supernatural abilities.

Did Annabeth's premonition come true?

Kind of. While Marie's sister did accurately predict Marie appearing to turn against her friends during the showdown with Thomas, she thankfully did not see how it ended. Marie did not kill everyone. Quite the opposite!

Where do Marie and her friends go from there?

Earlier in the episode, Polarity takes the man Thomas had running around as dean (played by Hamish Linklater) to the hospital. There, Black Noir II from The Boys brutally murders him. So Polarity knows what they're up against and encourages Marie and the others to run as fast from Godolkin University as they can before Homelander or someone else from Vought gets there. He insists that they go and refuses to go with them.

Everyone goes except Greg, who doesn't want to be separated from his sister Ally. The same goes for Annabeth, to be fair, who decides to stick with Marie no matter the cost. Soon after they hit the road, Starlight/Annie and A-Train find and recruit them for her resistance. (Spoiler for The Boys Season 4, but: at the end of that season the POTUS declares martial law and gives Homelander the freedom to eliminate any and all enemies of their fascist regime. It's bad out there! The rebels are going to need all the help they can get.)

There wasn't any post-credits scene or cameo from Karl Urban or Jack Quaid. (Sorry that all of the cameos we did get weren't enough for you, heathens!) But this does mean that it's highly possible that some of your favorite characters from Gen V will show up in The Boys final season. The next generation has officially leveled up.
