Beauty Editors Swear By These 10 Body Butters for Moisturized, Soft Skin, Even in the Winter

Ahead, our picks for sensitive skin, smelling great, and a non-greasy feel.

By

Is it just me, or did winter weather arrive out of nowhere this year? Practically overnight, temperatures dropped well below freezing, and with them went any trace of moisture in my skin. My legs, arms, and especially my elbows became dry, scaly, and downright uncomfortable. To restore my skin’s suppleness, I knew it was time to change my skincare routine, including reaching for my heavy-duty body lotions—aka the best body butters.

FYI: Body butters are far richer, thicker, and more moisturizing than your average lotion, thanks to their concentrated blends of nourishing butters, oils, and water-binding hydrators. A single application can lock in moisture for up to three days (!) while leaving skin with a healthy, radiant glow. There’s a lot to love about body butters… and a lot to choose from—honestly, maybe too many. That’s why I’ve spent literal years testing every new body butter launch and stacking them up against our tried-and-true favorites to create this definitive guide to the best body butters. It’s hard work—but someone’s gotta do it.

The best body butters at a glance:

With any of these plush body butters in your vanity, you will be able to fend off dry, irritated, and chapped skin for good—no matter how cold it gets. You can thank us later.

Delícia Drench Body Butter

Pros

  • This smells straight up heavenly (the scent is a warm floral)
  • Keeps skin supple for a full 48 hours

Cons

  • Because it's so thick, it can require some elbow grease to fully absorb

Why we love it: Dry skin simply doesn't exist when this body butter is stocked in your vanity. It works like magic to banish flakes, ashiness, and irritation, and it keeps moisture locked in for a full 48 hours. You can thank a blend of bacuri butter, SDJ's Brazilian Soothing Complex (a combo of copaiba resin and passionflower seed oil), and prebiotic hibiscus. Massaging this into your skin results in velvety-soft skin every single time.

One Cosmo editor says: “You know what gets me out of my winter funk? This body butter. Seriously! The scent is warm, cozy, and tropical. But better than that, the fluffy texture completely revives chapped skin—I go from looking I just spent six months in the Sahara desert to a well-hydrated goddess. It's perfect!” —MARY HONKUS, CONTRIBUTING BEAUTY EDITOR

Major Glow High Shine Skin Perfecting Body Crème

Pros

  • Leaves skin looking ethereal and radiant
  • Moisturizes, protects, and gently exfoliates

Cons

  • The scent can be a little strong for those with sensitive noses (although, it's one of our editor's favorites)

Why we love it: Have you ever wondered what the secret is behind celebrities head-to-toe red carpet radiance? Well, from the neck down, they're probably using this glimmering body butter. The thick cream melts right into skin, nourishing it with a mix of marula oil, mango seed butter, and shea butter, and leaves behind a healthy glow. This doesn't just make skin look ~incredible~ right after application, though. Ingredients like prickly pear and rosemary extracts gently exfoliate and protect your skin barrier, so your complexion improves every time you slather this on.

One Cosmo editor says: “The sweet, warm scent smells incredibly luxurious—I feel fancy and a little bougie every time I apply it. It absorbs fully as you rub it in, never leaving skin greasy, and it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin, which is rare for a scented body lotion.”—JASMINE HYMAN, ASSISTANT BEAUTY EDITOR

Best Thick Body Butter

Mutha Body Butter

Body Butter

Pros

  • This feels extra rich and thick
  • Luxuriously melts into skin

Cons

  • When we say thick, we mean it—it will require some rubbing to fully smooth into skin

Why we love it: One of the richest, thickest body butters we've ever tried, this pick from Mutha makes an instant difference in our skin. Brimming with mega-hydrators—including shea butter, coconut oil, and mango seed butter, just to name a few—this protects against dry winter skin. Many people swear by it for helping to seriously nourish skin during pregnancy and beyond to help prevent stretch marks. While there isn't really anything you can do to prevent stretch marks (and remember, they're totally normal), this cream is a great choice to slather on if you wanna make your skin more elastic and firm.

One Cosmo editor says: “As someone who lives for luxe, skin-loving moisture, this butter is an absolute dream—rich, velvety, and unapologetically indulgent. The shea, cocoa, and mango butter trifecta is perfection.” —JULEE WILSON, BEAUTY EDITOR-AT-LARGE

Luxera Body Cream

  • Has a spa-like soft scent

  • Most expensive body butter on this list

Why we love it: Your bathroom will feel like the most luxurious spa every. damn. day. when you use this. On top of deeply moisturizing, Danucera's Luxera Body Cream also works to boost firmness and elasticity, improves skin barrier function, and quickly qualms redness and irritation. A little goes a long way, too, so the big tub will last a very long time.

One Cosmo editor says: “I snagged this from the beauty closet after our beauty director Lauren Balsamo raved about it. It's now become my nightly ritual to completely saturate my entire body in this, get into my coziest PJs, and hop right into bed (bonus points if I've turned on my heated blanket). The rich cream coats my skin in so much moisture, but doesn't feel outrageously heavy either."—BETH GILLETTE, BEAUTY EDITOR

Best Drugstore Body Butter

eos Cashmere Whipped Oil Body Butter

Cashmere Whipped Oil Body Butter
Now 13% Off

Pros

  • Most affordable body butter on this list (and widely available at drugstores)
  • Has a soft cake-y vanilla scent that our entire team is obsessed with
  • This feels lush, velvety, and much more expensive than it is

Cons

  • Strong fragrance that lingers, which some people might not appreciate

Why we love it: Everything about this luscious body butter reminds us of icing, from the thick whipped texture comparable to meringue, to the dreamy vanilla cashmere scent. Despite the affordable price—it's literally the cheapest pick on our list—this easily competes with formulas four times the price because it uses high-quality ingredients (lookin' at you, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and glycerin) to flood skin with moisture for a full 72 hours.

One Cosmo editor says: “While many body butters hydrate my skin, they often are so thick that they just sit on top of it. This one has a unique texture that both absorbs moisture but leaves behind a glowy finish. I essentially get to skip the body oil step in my routine when I smooth this on."—BG

Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter

Pros

  • Suitable for sensitive skin
  • Works to soothe irritation and qualm redness

Cons

  • The scent is a little bland

Why we love it: Soy milk and honey are nature's remedy for inflamed, itchy skin. These two ingredients naturally soothe, soften, and lock in moisture, and they just so happen to be infused into this gentle Kiehl's body butter. Smoothing this airy lotion onto your legs and arms feels like therapy for your skin, and it beautifully keeps dryness at bay all year round.

One Cosmo editor says: “Kiehl's is so classic and everything they make is fantastic for sensitive skin, but this body butter is such a sleeper hit. It's a bit denser than the OG Creme de Corps lotion, yet it doesn't feel heavy or sticky in the slightest. I have plenty of family members who have sensitive skin, and they've told me this has become their skin savior.”—MH

Best Non-Greasy Body Butter

Saltair Multi-Lipid Body Butter

Multi-Lipid Body Butter

Pros

  • Lightweight yet super moisturizing
  • Leaves behind an enviable glow

Cons

  • You might want to apply twice a day to get the most hydrating benefits

Why we love it: Some people shy away from body butters because they can leave skin feeling greasy. If that sounds like you, hi, let me introduce you to the one body butter that will change your life. No matter how much of this sumptuous body butter you apply, it will always sink into your skin like magic. That's because it uses lightweight—yet extremely effective—hydrators, such as ceramides, lipids, and fatty acids, which sink deep into your skin upon contact. Although, know that just a dab is enough to experience the supple effects.

One Cosmo editor says: “I'm legit obsessed with this body butter. The soft vanilla scent is sweet and fresh, but not too intense that it messes with whatever perfume I'm wearing. But I really love how smooth this makes my skin. I've been loading it up on my arms and legs in the mornings, and I think it's the antidote to winter dryness."—BG

Musk Therapy Body Cream

Pros

  • This smells like a very wealthy person (aka musky and citrus)
  • The texture isn't as thick as other body butters

Cons

  • It's a bit pricey

Why we love it: Why do most body butters smell like vanilla? Nothing against vanilla, but not everyone wants to smell sweet. If you want a body butter that gives off the aura of a sophisticated rich b*tch, this is a need. Musk Therapy is a delicate citrus and musk skin scent that amplifies your aura. Of course, it also helps that the cream itself is lavishly smooth and supple with glycerin and almond oil.

One Cosmo editor says: “I kid you not, the scent of this body butter rivals some perfumes. I've had people stop my on the street to ask what fragrance I'm wearing after I slather this on. It's not overpowering or sickeningly sweet like a lot of creams. This feels refined and sophisticated... and, you know, it also helps that my skin is softer than a baby's bottom when I use it.”—MH

What's the difference between body butter and body lotion?

line break

There are three main differentiators between body lotions and body butters.

  • Consistency: Body butters are much thicker than body lotions. These super hydrators are dense, rich, and extra creamy and typically melt into skin with some effort; whereas body lotions are lighter, more fluid, and seamlessly absorb. This is why you'll often find body butters in tubs while lotions are in tubes or bottles. The texture of a body butter is so thick that it has to be scooped out of a jar.
  • Ingredients: Body lotions and body butters have similar ingredients, but the latter tend to be infused with high concentrations of rich hydrators, like butters (think: Shea, mango, and cocoa) and oils, like coconut, argan, and jojoba. Body lotions, on the other hand, are water-based, and while they may contain nourishing butters and oils, the concentrations aren't as intense.
  • Moisturizing Level: Overall, body butters are more moisturizing than lotions and are able to lock in hydration for long periods of time—sometimes for up to 72 hours.

Is one better than the other? Not necessarily. It can sometimes come down to personal preference. Do you mind dipping your fingers into a tub to apply a thick cream for the benefit of super hydrated skin? Then, a body butter is prob for you. But if you'd rather swipe on something ultra lightweight, stick with lotions.

How we tested body butters:

line break

Cosmo's team of beauty editors test products year round to bring you the best formulas that are worth your time and money. For this story, we researched best-selling body butters, went through our stash of personal favorites, and slathered on dozens of body butters to see how they improved our skin's moisture levels. After comparing notes, we narrowed down our list to the top 10 best body butters that banish dry skin for good.

How to choose the best body butter for you:

line break

Look at the ingredients.

Body butters contain a mix of rich butters and oils that offer superior hydration. Those that are butter-heavy (formulas that contain a mix of shea, mango, cocoa, or other butters) are going to feel denser and heavier. If you're looking for intense moisture without a gloopy or sticky feeling, you may want to opt for a formula that leans on oils, glycerin, or ceramides, like the Kopari Ultra Restore Body Butter. These feel a bit airier and will have an easier time sinking into your skin, but don't worry—this still offer up hella hydration.

Consider the scent.

Most body butters are created with a delectable scent to enhance your overall body care experience. However, if you're sensitive to scents, there are a few options that are more mild or don't include fragrance at all. If that sounds like you, Kiehl's Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter will be a wonderful addition to your vanity.
