Plus, many brands have been inspired by the fresh and woodsy DNA of the original to create their own iterations that smell similar. But can they really hold a candle to the O.G.? I set out on a mission to sniff all of the so-called "dupes" on the market and rank them for how similar they smell to the original. But I also went looking for options that were cheaper and potentially called to those who weren't the biggest fans of the original. And I found some really good options.

We can't break down the dupes without nodding to the original, okay? Baccarat Rouge 540, by Maison Francis Kurkdjian (one of the most famous French perfumers of the 21st century who owns his own brand but also is the creative director of perfumery at Christian Dior), was developed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Baccarat crystal line. The note breakdown is actually defined by three "auras," according to Kurkdjian: A sparkling opening, followed by a warm middle, and a woodsy and sweet base.
I've been using this perfume on and off for the last five years, and it's still one of the most unique scents I own. The way it smells upon first spritz versus how it develops on my skin is truly a nod to perfume artistry (sorry, I'm getting nerdy here). There's a reason everyone is so obsessed with this jasmine-dominant fragrance: It's light and airy yet warm and enveloping—it's really unlike any other perfume (you know, until everyone started making similar versions). Yes, it's extremely expensive, but all you need is one spritz to last all day long, meaning the bottle will last a pretty long time. But if you're a little scared of the price tag, you've got a whole slew of cheaper options below.

Although Dossier now creates many of its own original fragrances, the brand started with creating affordable dupes to expensive, iconic perfumes. So it's no surprise to me that Ambery Saffron, its counterpart to Baccarat Rouge 540, smells the most similar of every dupe I've sniffed. It's not exact when you place them side by side, but on skin, I can't really tell that it's two different perfumes.
With my beauty editor hat on, I'd say Ambery Saffron is a bit more woodsy than Baccarat, which dries down extremely sweet on my skin. But that's likely because it doesn't have the ambroxan and sugary notes that give BR that syrupy quality. However, I really do love the addition of orange blossom in this Dossier perfume. It creates a teensy hint of citrus that works well with jasmine and saffron.

I'm fully obsessed with Quince. Their high-quality yet affordable bedding, clothes, bags—it's all so good. But I had actually never tested their fragrance line before this experiment. The brand has eight fragrances, all of which resemble designer perfumes at a cheaper price. Oud Rouge is their take on Baccarat Rouge 540, and it's pretty close, IMO.
Oud Rouge combines all of the main notes of Baccarat Rouge. There's jasmine and saffron at the top, which really give it that BR540-esque scent. But there's also amberwood and cedar for the warm woodiness, as well as resin that adds a sticky quality. Unlike the original, there aren't any of those gourmand notes, but resin definitely adds a bit of it. Honestly, I think a lot of the sweetness here comes from jasmine, making it more white-floral and dewy than a cloying yumminess. It's definitely no exact dupe, but for $50, it really leans on and gets the DNA. And I personally love the bottle. It looks chic and minimal, matching a lot of the other fragrances I own.

The sandalwood gives this a much deeper scent profile than the original. If Bacarrat Rouge smells too traditionally "feminine" to you, then you'd probably love this. It's not nearly as sweet, leaning more into the warm, spiciness with an undertone of woodsiness. I would wear this more in the fall/winter or in the evening for that reason.

Sure, the bottles take me right back to high school. But this scent feels a lot more grown up than the stuff I used back then. In fact, this was the first ever Baccarat Rouge 540 dupes I tried. But it's still one of the best to this day.
The notes are mostly different, but hit a lot of the same ideas. There's sandalwood for a grounding scent, amber for the cozy factor, and a subtle sweetness from sugar and musk. Unlike BR540, though, this one uses starflower (fitting, considering the name) and tangelo to create the sparkling quality of the original. It's definitely not the same scent, but you could probably fool some unsuspecting noses. And most of all, this has some serious lasting power and projection. You'd think you were wearing an expensive eau de parfum, not an under-$20 body spray.

Everything Sol De Janeiro does is tropical in nature. So the Cheirosa '68 body and hair mist is basically like if you bottled Baccarat Rouge and beachiness. This fruity scent is much juicier and more ripe than the original BR540, all thanks to pink dragonfruit. It's more mouthwatering and bright than the sparkling scent of Baccarat Rouge, making it perfect to spray on alongside your Baccarat Rouge (or a dupe) or if you want something a bit more sheer and beachy. Consider it Baccarat’s carefree, summer-y cousin.

11 11 Lychee, a flanker of the original 11 11 perfume from the brand, is a sweet, fruity perfume with underpinings of warmth. It's got that brightness I love with Baccarat Rouge. But instead of jasmine and saffron, there's raspberry and lychee for a fruity opening. However, the base goes into more BR territories, with sugar, ambrette, ambroxan, and hinoki wood. They're subtle enough that they really just sit on the outskirts of the fragrance, but that's why it reminds me of the MFK scent so much.

Surprisingly, this celebrity perfume bears a striking resemblance to Baccarat Rouge. But what I loved most about this when I spritzed it all over is how long it lasts. Ariana is busy, so she can't be reapplying her scent all the time. I get it! And this fragrance proves it, with impressive longevity on skin and clothes. One spritz on the top my hand, and I'll be sniffing the pear, praline, vanilla, and musk notes for days.
