The last time I wore a tankini, it was purple, covered with sparkly peace sign appliqués, and from Justice (remember Justice?!). But since everything early aughts is cool again, tankinis are making a comeback for Summer 2025—at least, according to TikTok.

Tankinis are arguably the season's most controversial trend, since they were once seen as a more modest and, let's say it, less sophisticated alternative to bikinis. I remember my summer camp making us wear them because bikinis were too "mature." But today's styles aren’t the same as the ones from your middle school nightmares—2025's take is more grown-up, with belly button-baring crops, daring plunges, and strapless shoulders. Even Bella Hadid is putting a supermodel spin on the trend with her latest Frankies Bikinis collab.

Although I have a deep fear of reliving my tween years, I bravely tried on over a dozen tankinis to determine if the trend is truly worth diving into. My take? They're a convenient option for days when you want a little more tummy coverage, but don't want to go the one-piece route. Won't you go on my tankini journey with me? There are no appliqués in sight, promise.

x BELLA HADID Springtime Bikini Top

Pros

  • fully adjustable
  • charming plaid pattern
  • doubles as a going-out top

Cons

  • a little on the pricier side

Leave it to Bella Hadid to design a tankini you'll actually want to wear all summer long. It looks like your average scarf top, but is made from swimsuit material so you can wear it to the beach, pool, and beyond. The plaid pattern is an unexpected departure from your typical florals and stripes, so you'll stand out from the crowd. Need I say more?!

This was my first time trying anything from Frankies Bikinis, and the quality is truly unmatched. I love that the top is fully adjustable with ties around the back and neck, giving me plenty of support. I'm already thinking of all the ways I can wear this top outside the pool, since its Western-inspired style is the perfect complement to denim shorts and cowboy boots. I paired it with the Dove bikini bottoms, which are just the right amount of cheeky without being a full-on thong.

Blackbough Swim Nola Tube Top

Nola Tube Top

Pros

  • *actually* stays put, courtesy of an elastic band
  • vibrant color options
  • won't give you weird tan lines

Cons

  • some may not like how cropped it is

Between the colorful abstract print and nostalgic tube top neckline, this tankini is giving me allll the Y2K vibes. You're probably thinking, isn't a strapless swimsuit kinda risky? This piece has a built-in grippy band that goes all the way around the top, so you won't have to stress about it slipping down. Plus, no funky tan lines!

  • Material: 80% Recycled Nylon, 20% Spandex
  • Colors: 5
  • Sizes: XS to XXL

Spiritually, this tankini feels the closest to the swimsuits of my middle school days—and I mean that in a good way! The colors look just as vibrant in person, and the strapless neckline is ridiculously flattering. I was admittedly skeptical about the grippy band situation, but it stayed in place—even when I was jumping around and sweating. Paired with the matching cheeky (but not too cheeky!) side-tie bottoms, this set is going to be a staple in my summer swim rotation.

CUPSHE Crossback Tankini Set

Crossback Tankini Set

Pros

  • lots of color options
  • sexy plunge neckline
  • flattering ruched sides

Cons

  • can't mix and match bottom size if ordered on Amazon

Prefer a tankini that reads more one-piece than crop top? This set from CUPSHE provides plenty of tummy coverage with its hip-length top and strategic side ruching. It comes with full-coverage matching bottoms with a high-waisted cut that gives extra support around the midsection. And since we're all about ~balance~ at Cosmo, a sultry deep-V plunge and strappy tie-up back keeps this swimsuit from feeling stuffy.

  • Material: 80% Nylon, 20% Spandex

First of all, how gorgeous is this coral red color?! I've had some hit-or-miss experiences with Amazon swimsuits in the past, so I was pleasantly surprised by this CUPSHE tankini. I adore the plunge neckline, which shows off some cleavage while giving me plenty of coverage on the side. It also has lace-up straps that cross on the back, which helps evenly distribute the weight of my chest and prevent shoulder pain—a major win, IMHO. If you want the look of a one-piece with the convenience of a two-piece, this is it.

Seabreeze Crop Bikini Top

Cons

  • some reviewers say it's too cropped

Channel your inner Meredith Blake from The Parent Trap with this high-neck style from Athleta, the brand behind some of our favorite athleisure items. This tankini features contrast piping and a racerback for some sporty flair. Even better: It comes in both standard and D-DD sizing, with a built-in shelf bra to support the gals.

The first thing I noticed about this tankini top is how comfortable it is—it has a looser fit than other options, but there's a built-in shelf bra for chest support. I saw some reviewers complaining about the cropped fit, but I love how it highlights my waist with its curved hem. And since it looks and feels like a sports bra, I would totally wear this with leggings to a yoga class. But I'd skip the matching bottoms or size down—they provided a little too much coverage for my taste, and kinda made me feel like I was wearing a diaper. Thankfully, it's easy to find other black bikini bottoms.

SKIMS Signature Swim Cami Top

Signature Swim Cami Top

Pros

  • sleek, minimalist silhouette
  • adjustable straps
  • best size range on this list

Cons

  • built-in bra is on the smaller side

Kim Kardashian's apparel and lingerie brand might be best known for its shapewear, but its line of minimalist swimsuits is not to be overlooked. This no-frills top looks like your classic spaghetti-strap camisole in swimsuit form—and it'll look just as effortless styled with jeans or leggings as it does with bikini bottoms.

  • Material: 76% Recycled Polyamide, 24% Elastane
  • Colors: 6
  • Sizes: XXS to 4XL

The beauty of this tankini is in its simplicity, making me feel sexy, but not like I'm trying too hard. My only gripe is its built-in pads—they look like a triangle bikini on the inside and were way too small for me. I ended up cutting them out for a smoother look, but people with smaller chests may prefer to keep them in for extra lift. On the bright side, it does have adjustable straps! I also love how easy it is to mix and match with SKIMS bottoms. I paired it with the Tanga bikini bottom, which I've owned for more than two years.

Pacsun Ramona Eyelet Tank Bikini Top

Ramona Eyelet Tank Bikini Top

Pros

  • affordable
  • trendy butter yellow color
  • fun details like cutouts and eyelet fabric

Cons

  • not supportive enough for larger chests

Pacsun is one of my go-to destinations for affordable swimwear, and this set combines some of the season's biggest trends—butter yellow, eyelets, and a tankini cut—for a flirty two-piece that's affordable. Plus, it accentuates smaller busts with its scrunch detail and teeny cutout, making it an excellent pick for members of the IBTC.

  • Material: 85% Nylon, 16% Spandex
  • Colors: 2
  • Sizes: XS to XL

I'm genuinely sad that this tankini didn't exist during my middle school days, since the eyelet fabric and sunny color are so fun and youthful. But larger chest girlies, be warned: The top half of this tankini is on the smaller side and wasn't very supportive, so I think it would be best-suited for C cups and smaller. That said, I absolutely adore the cheeky, high cut matching bottoms, which make this otherwise playful set feel grown-up and sexy.

Summersalt Cinched Square Neck Tankini Top

Cinched Square Neck Tankini Top

Pros

  • provides excellent support for big busts
  • side ties allow you to adjust length
  • fits true to size

Cons

  • style is on the mature side

Finding bathing suits that accommodate larger chests is no easy feat, but this tankini top provides plenty of support with its wide, adjustable straps and built-in shelf bra. Its square neckline is endlessly flattering, since it highlights your décolletage without revealing tons of cleavage. Another fun feature? Adjustable side ties, so you can wear it cropped or full-length.

  • Material: 78% Recycled Polyamide, 22% Elastane
  • Colors: 4
  • Sizes: 2 to 22

As someone with a larger chest, I was relieved when I slipped into this LBT (little black tankini, of course!) and it fit like a glove. My chest felt supported and lifted, thanks to the sewn-in cups and shelf bra. As an added bonus, the wider straps don't dig into my shoulders. For bottoms, I kept it simple with Summersalt's The High Leg Mid Rise Bikini Bottom, which was super comfortable and fit true to size. Although this set is a bit fuller-coverage than my usual style, I'll be packing it for my next family beach trip when I want something more PG.
