“Blow jobs are popular for good reason,” says author August McLaughlin, host of the Girl Boner podcast. “Many folks enjoy giving and receiving them for perks like intimate connection and intense, often orgasmic pleasure.”

If you’re already a fan of giving blow jobs, trying out these different techniques can help you find new ways to do more of what you love. And if giving head isn’t your fave? Experimenting with new positions may just change your mind—especially if you can find one that gets you off, too.

If a position isn’t quite doing it for you, adjust it to your liking. “Figure out what you most enjoy, and make sure you’re getting that,” says sexologist Suzannah Weiss, author of Subjectified: Becoming a Sexual Subject.

The Seated 69

Illustration of two abstract figures in a dynamic pose.

How to Do It: “One partner sits on a chair, bed, or sofa. The other partner turns upside down, placing their crotch in the seated person’s face for easy access, and their hands on the furniture for stability. Think of it like a 69-style, seated hug,” says McLaughlin.

Pros “While this position takes some physical strength and balance, it can provide a sense of fun and novelty if you’re used to more basic, lying down sex positions. The mutual oral stimulation is a bonus,” she says.

Cons: This is, in fact, very tricky. A wide sturdy chair with large arm rests can help, but if you can't quite nail this one, totally fine to skip or move on to the next thing.

Switch It Up: Add bonus stimulation with a finger vibe.

Make It Hotter: Try echoing each other’s mouth motions—they flick their tongue, you flick your tongue. They suck your clit, you suck their head.

The Throne

Two figures in a suggestive pose with playful elements.

How to Do It: “Your partner sits in a chair with their legs a bit spread, and you kneel between their legs underneath the chair as if you’re worshipping them,” says Weiss.

Pros: Great for cock worship, a common kink wherein the worshipper is obsessed with and in awe of their partner’s penis—receiving it in every way and indulging in their cum, explains Weiss.

Cons: Worshiping a peen might not be everyone’s jam. If so, this works as a plain old non-worshiping BJ, too.

Switch It Up: If you want an extra spectacular grand finale, get a penis stroker attachment that fits over a wand vibrator.

Make It Hotter: After you’ve done your cock-worshipping, hand your partner the wand and they can do some worshipping in return.

Sideways Oral

How to Do It: The Kivin Method is a sideways position for cunnilingus, but it can be a blow job position too, says Weiss. Have you partner sit or lie back on a bed. Kneel at your partner’s side (as opposed to head-on) and you’re good to go.

Pros: “This creates a slightly different angle and sensation since you're a bit higher up than you'd be if you were between your partner's legs. Your hands are also a bit freer to touch other parts of their body,” says Weiss.

Cons: There’s not a lot of eye contact. If you need more, just use your hand for a few strokes so you can turn and look at your partner.

Switch It Up: Use your free hand to cup or play with their balls!

Make It Hotter: If you want to sit on a vibrator, go right ahead. Try a grinder-style toy.

The Sweet 16

Illustration of two stylized figures in a close embrace.

How to Do It: Your partner lies down flat. Straddle your partner’s chest, facing their feet. Bend down to get them in your mouth for an upside-down BJ.

Pros: “The sweet 16 is an easy position that works well for anyone with anxiety around giving a blow job,” says sex and couples’ therapist Sara Sloan, owner of Austin Concierge Therapy. “With your back to your partner’s face, it blocks the view, preventing the receiver from seeing what the giver is doing." This is especially helpful if you're shy about being watched.

Cons: No eye contact. Stay connected with your partner with some dirty talk, words of love, or sexy questions like “Do you like when I do this?”

Switch It Up: Slide your hips back toward your partner’s face if you require some oral sex yourself (rimming works too).

Make It Hotter: “It allows you to have both hands free, which is especially helpful for anyone working with a larger penis,” she says. Give a XL-sized partner the feeling of being fully enveloped by lubing up your hands and using them as an extension of your mouth.

The Sidecar

How to Do It: Lie on your side at the edge of the bed with your head turned toward your partner. Your partner stands next to the bed to receive their BJ. “You can use one hand to hold and direct the penis into your mouth, while controlling the thrusting movement by holding onto your partner’s behind with your other hand,” says Sloan.

Pros: “This is a relaxed way to give a blow job without the giver ever having to get out of bed,” she says. “It’s ideal for lazy Sunday mornings or for anyone with limited mobility.”

Cons: The mouth-to-penis ratio might not ~quite~ work. You can elevate your head with a pillow or two and/or your partner can squat down a little.

Switch It Up: For a different angle, or if their penis isn’t at mouth level, your partner can put their hands behind you on the bed and lean over you.

Make It Hotter: If you want to be even lazier—yes, it can be done!—have your partner do the thrusting. Fire up a rabbit toy and revel in your ingenuity.

The Face F*ck

Abstract illustration depicting two human figures in an intimate position.

How to Do It: Lie on your back. Your partner straddles your face to basically give themselves a blow job by thrusting into your mouth. You’ll have your hands free to masturbate or use a toy.

Pros: This works best in more hard-core, power exchange situations—with very clear consent along the way.

Cons: This can feel a bit intense if you're not used to submitting, and no worries, it's not for everyone! Try curling your hand around their shaft as a buffer to control how deep they go.

Switch It Up: Change the power dynamics by using your hand as a buffer, then making your partner beg for a little more.

Make It Hotter: A thrusting toy is great here 'cause it mirrors what's going on with your mouth.

“Lier’s” Poker

How to Do It: Sit back, leaning against a stack of pillows or the bed frame. Your partner straddles your body, sliding their penis or strap-on into your mouth.

Pros: Your mouth attends to the BJ-ing while your hands are free to touch yourself. Plus, it’s super comfortable.

Cons: Not great for eye contact. You can take the time to share a gaze every once in a while, or convey what you’re feeling via moans.

Switch It Up: Let them thrust into your mouth, or they can stay still and you bring your mouth to them.

Make It Hotter: Go ultra lazy and lie back, letting a toy take the lead.

8

The Hump and Blow

Two figures in a relaxed pose on a striped mat.

How to Do It: Your partner lies on their back. You lie face down, straddling a pillow, and slip a lubed hand between your legs. As you suck your partner, slide back and forth over your hand.

Pros: This is great for humpers because you can hump away as you please (and as you're pleasing).

Cons: You won’t have both hands available to enhance your BJ. You can just use one hand, or just go mouth-only.

Switch It Up: Add an arousal gel to enhance your sensations.

Make It Hotter: If you need more power, invest in a toy mount that can hold a Magic Wand.

The Yin Yang Edge

Illustration of two figures in a close, intimate pose.

How to Do It: Lie facing each other so you’re in a sideways 69 position. Take turns giving oral sex to avoid that awk 69 zone where you're simultaneously giving and receiving, yet not doing either properly.

Pros: You get to become more attuned to each other’s bodies and how they respond. Plus watching each other get more turned on amps everything up.

Cons: You might be there awhile. If anyone gets sore, shift around a little until all is well.

Switch It Up: Incorporate edging. Torture your partner by bringing them just to the brink of orgasm, then switch.

Make It Hotter: Draw it out as long as possible for the most explosive orgasm. (If you add edging, know that edging is inherently frustrating. If it’s too much, have a kind of "opposite" safe word that means you really are ready to cum, like, ASAP, pls.)

10

The Mouth Off

How to Do It: Lie on your back and let your partner mount your mouth. They can lie on top of you, or, if you lean your head off the edge of the bed, they can stand next to the bed.

Pros: This works well for power play because your partner is fully in control of the thrusting and depth.

Cons: This might feel overwhelming. When you're surrendering control of the depth of penetration, make sure you let your partner know if they’re going too deep or you don’t love it.

Switch It Up: Work your fingers between your legs as you take your partner’s mouth.

Make It Hotter: If you’re into the power exchange, play up moaning and even gagging a little if it doesn’t feel too fake or porny to you. (This is all about play. If aren’t into it, don’t do it!)
