Why have car sex when there’s a perfectly comfortable bed right there? Sexy road trip, my friend. Hop in the car, cue up the sex playlist, and see what adventures await. Car sex isn’t just a nostalgic rite of passage—it’s a legitimate way to shake up desire, interrupt routine, and feel closer than ever.

“When you take sex out of the bedroom and put it somewhere unexpected, the body wakes up. The nervous system pays attention. Desire sharpens. You’re not operating on muscle memory anymore. You are improvising together,” says Annette Benedetti, sex and intimacy coach and the host of Talk Sex With Annette.

Whether you’re pulling over for a lust-fueled quickie or planning a choreographed sex adventure, things in your F-wagon will be hotter (and legal-er) with some prep. First, pick a safe, isolated spot. “Anxiety shuts desire down quickly, so secluded always wins,” says Benedetti.

Stash sex toys and lube in the glove compartment, blankets in the back, and dress for what’ll be going down. “The foreplay can start before you leave the house. Consider going commando or wearing a dress, skirt, or something with an elastic waistband to make undressing easier,” says Karen Bigman, certified sex educator and host of the podcast Taboo to Truth: Life & Sex After 50.

Use the restrictions as a challenge: Can you find a position that doesn’t involve a seat belt buckle in the butt? Let’s see! “Car sex works best when you stop trying to recreate bed sex and start working with what the space offers,” says Benedetti. There’s no rule that you must strip naked and pound away.

“Embrace outercourse! Penetration isn’t required. Getting creative with hands, feet, your mouth, and toys can all be super pleasurable,” says Bigman. And if your spot isn’t quite as private as you thought? “Have a quick reset plan. Clothing that gets you fully dressed in seconds keeps things playful instead of stressful,” says Benedetti.

Here are 10 car sex positions perfect for getting it on in your very own vehicle.

The Reclined Grind

How To Do It: Lean the passenger seat back. The giver sits and the receiver straddles them.

Pros: “This works because it prioritizes pressure and grinding instead of thrusting,” says Benedetti.

Cons: Your car may have limited head room. It helps if the receiver stays low and grinds instead of up and down thrusting. “Grinding, rocking, and sustained contact tend to feel better than big movements,” she notes.

Switch It Up: “Place a small pillow or folded jacket behind the lower back of the person underneath to improve the angle and comfort,” she says.

Make It Hotter: Toys can go on the road with you too. Try a wearable vibrator or penis ring.

The Backseat Butterfly

How To Do It: The giver kneels on the floor. The receiver sits on the back seat with their legs bent and butterflied, knees apart. The giver can use hands, toys and/or mouth.

Pros: “Great for pacing and switching sensations without breaking the moment,” says Benedetti.

Cons: Might have limited leg room. Try the front passenger seat with the seat pushed back as far as it will go.

Switch It Up: Try a penetrative version. The giver stands and leans over, using their partner’s shoulder or the back of the seat for balance.

Make It Hotter: The giver can edge their partner, or just generally act more Dom-ish. “Hold the receiver’s thighs firmly in place to limit movement and intensify sensation without changing positions,” says Benedetti.

The Reach-Across

How To Do It: Remember the primal hotness of first-time groping? Recreate the vibe with a fully clothed make-out session. Do it old-school with much kissing, then some extended boob play, etc…

Pros: “What makes this hot is restraint and anticipation,” says Benedetti.

Cons: Not great with tight jeans. Wear loose clothes for optimal groping.

Switch It Up: “Keep hands above the waist for a full minute before allowing genital touch. The waiting does the work for you,” she says.

Make It Hotter: If you don’t want to get naked in the car, you can try some clothes-on outercourse. Grind against each other or use hands or toys. “Staying partially clothed adds tension,” says Benedetti. “Slipping hands inside clothes instead of removing them keeps desire simmering and turns anticipation into the main event.”

The High Rider

How To Do It: The receiver sits in the back of an SUV or on the edge of the car seat with the door open. The giver lifts their partner by the hips and stands to enter. If the lifting is not workable, have the giver lean down to enter, holding onto the car’s roof.

Pros: The thrill of semi-risky behavior, plus deep penetration.

Cons: You’ve very exposed here so you’ll have to be somewhere VERY secluded. If you can’t find a good spot, please move along.

Switch It Up: If you’re really in the middle of nowhere, get super loud—just because you can.

Make It Hotter: The positioning makes this a good chance to try some foot stuff. “Foot worship might sound unusual to some, but even for those who don’t have a foot fetish, this can be a really underrated erogenous zone,” says Bigman. “Lightly touching, kissing, or licking their feet can be a huge turn-on.”

The Bumpy Ride

How To Do It: Put a seatbelt into service as a restraint. One person lies back and the other snaps the seat belt around then and voila, instant kink.

Pros: “Light restraint works beautifully in a car. A seatbelt gently limiting arm movement or keeping someone pressed back into the seat can create a delicious sense of containment. It should feel intentional and secure, never trapped,” says Benedetti.

Cons: If someone is new to being bound, it can be a little scary. Let the bound person put their hand on the seatbelt release knob for an instant exit plan. “This is not about extreme play or needing a kink identity. Think of this as playing with the edge of control and anticipation, which tends to turn on both vanilla lovers and seasoned kinksters alike.”

Switch It Up: If you don’t feel comfortable with actual bondage, try a psychological version. “Rules can be simple and hot. Hands stay here. Do not move yet. Wait. Power comes from who gets to decide, not from force,” she says.

Make It Hotter: Try a hybrid of edging and orgasm denial. The person on top edges the person on the bottom, but doesn’t let it end with an orgasm. By the time you get home, you will both be desperate for each other.

Road Cowgirl

How To Do It: Need a park n’ go position? One person lies on their back and the other person straddles them. “Have the partner underneath keep hands on hips to help guide rhythm and maintain steady contact,” says Benedetti.

Pros: Extremely versatile and works in pretty much any kind of car.

Cons: For a lot of people with vulvas, cowgirl is not great for clit stim. They can use a hand to rub themselves or lean way forward to grind the clit on their partner’s public bone.

Switch It Up: Try less bouncing and more rocking, she says. “Forward pressure and slow circles tend to feel better and last longer in a car.”

Make It Hotter: The person on top turns around for an on-the-road version of reverse cowgirl. “Just watch your head if you’re in a smaller car!” says Bigman.

Car Doggie

How To Do It: Fold down the seats in the back of an SUV for some car doggie. The receiver gets on all fours and the giver get on their knees behind them.

Pros: Animalistic sex with deep penetration.

Cons: You’re visible if your windows aren’t tinted. Try draping some blankets or towels over the clothes hooks for more privacy.

Switch It Up: Change the feel by having the receiver move while the giver stays still.

Make It Hotter: If you brought a toy along, this is a good time for the giver to use it on their partner.

8

Backseat Face-Sitting

How To Do It: Move the front seats all the way up and go to the back seat. The giver sits on the floor and the receiver put their feet on the back seat and squats over their partner for some face sitting. The receiver holds on the headrest for leverage. “The receiver controls depth and pace entirely, using the seat or headrest for leverage while giving clear cues,” says Benedetti.

Pros: “This naturally gives control to the receiver, which can feel powerful and intimate,” she says.

Cons: If the receiver is up there for a while, their quads will feel it. If they shift to their knees--problem solved.

Switch It Up: If the back seat isn’t big enough, the giver can lie back on the seat.

Make It Hotter: You can muck about with power dynamics with queening. The receiver can give commands, make requests or just take what they want. (Be a kind queen, though, and don’t mush the giver.)

Lie Back and Take It

How To Do It: Find a very secluded space and strip down for oral. Take turns going down on each other. One person lies back comfortably(ish, it is a car) and the other gets between their knees.

Pros: It can be easier to array yourself into oral sex positions than penetrative ones.

Cons: No one’s available for lookout. To be more discreet, keep most of your clothes on, just removing what’s absolutely necessary.

Switch It Up: It also works with mutual masturbation with toys or hands. Pop supplies in the glove compartment and you’re good to go.

Make It Hotter: Does it work with 69ing? Find out.

10

Half-Blooming Lotus

How To Do It: For a more comfortable version of Lotus, the giver sits in the passenger seat, feet on the ground. The receiver sits on their lap, with their arms and legs wrapped around their partner. Stare into each other’s eyes and sync your breathing.

Pros: The Lotus, an ancient Tantric position, is super connecting and intimate.

Cons: Not great if you’re into fast and furious thrusting. If you need a big finish, lie down for easier pounding.

Switch It Up: For the full Lotus version, hop in the backseat. The giver sits with their legs crossed. The receiver sits on their lap. Wrap your arms and legs around each other.

Make It Hotter: “Stillness is an underrated power move. Asking one partner to stay still while the other controls rhythm and pressure heightens sensation fast. It also shifts focus away from performance and toward feeling,” says Benedetti.
