Double double, toil, and trouble. All magic comes with a price, and stories about witches come in all shapes and sizes. They can be as tame as a cottagecore Pinterest board, sexier than a siren, or straight-up terrifying. The great thing about witches themselves, as The Wizard of Oz put so bluntly, is that they aren’t necessarily good or bad. Witchcraft has historically been a way for women to step outside the bounds of society. It’s a satisfying escape! Women have suffered enough (hello, Salem Witch Trials), so let fictional witches do whatever they want.
Witchy shows go back as far as the 1960s and as recent as... right now! Mayfair Witches, anyone?! Here are the 37 best television shows about witches for when you want something more specific than just fantasy, horror, or even romance in your weekend binge. There are also great shows about just one excellent witch, or shows with magical girlies that blur those lines a little bit. We honestly don’t even need a Harry Potter series at this point. (Did you hear that, Powers That Be...? we’re all good!!) Burn sage, pour yourself some brew, put on your pointiest hat, and let’s get into it.
Dune Prophecy
Witches are truly having such a big moment. Remember the witches in Dune and Dune: Part Two who wear veils, use “the voice” and are kind of running the show by getting pregnant all over the galaxy? There’s a spin-off series all about them on HBO Max! Yay!
Agatha All Along
If WandaVision’s witchiness wasn’t enough for you, the spin-off in which Agatha assembles a supergroup of her own definitely will be. The cast is everything. Joining Kathryn Hahn are Marvel magic users/actors including Joe Locke, Aubrey Plaza, Sasheer Zamata, and PATTI FREAKIN' LUPONE.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Middle-earth tends to focus on the wizards (Gandalf, obvs), but there were some very interesting and potentially witch-like characters at the end of season 1 that I’m interested in learning more about in season 2. And if you’re into magical women in general, characters like Galadriel and Disa fit that bill in their own ways plenty.
House of the Dragon
I don’t know what kind of magic Alys Rivers is doing to Daemon Targaryen in season 2, but I’m here for it. Her character is quickly becoming one of my favorite Thrones characters and one of my favorite witches in one.
The Acolyte
Mae and Osha (Amandla Stenberg), the twin main characters balancing on the tightrope between the light and dark side in the new Star Wars series The Acolyte, grew up in a covenant of witches who use the Force just like the Jedi—but also, in many ways, not like the Jedi at all. Mother Aniseya (Jodie Turner-Smith), the leader of the witches and one of the girl’s mothers, speaks so beautifully about the Force (she calls it the Thread) that you’ll be ditching that lightsaber in no time.
The Originals
The spin-off expands on the witch lore in Julie Plec’s universe (we love you Bonnie!!!!!) to dig into Klaus’s story. It’s also set in the always magical New Orleans.
Wednesday
She’s not as much of a witch as Sabrina, but Netflix’s latest dark princess does have supernatural abilities and does have a pretty witch-like mother and does go to a school for magically gifted youth. I am just saying.
Ahsoka
It’s seriously so wild to me that there are witches in Star Wars now. Okay, so maybe if you've kept up with the animated series and comics you already knew this. But still. One of the main characters on the latest Disney+ series, Morgan Elsbeth, is just straight-up a witch, bro.
The Evermoor Chronicles
While you’re on Disney+, you could also check out this kid-friendly magical British series that used to air on Disney Channel.
Mayfair Witches
The AMC series, based on the Anne Rice novels, is about as witchy as it gets. It technically takes place in the same world as Interview With the Vampire, if you’re a fan of shared universes. Mayfair Witches is all about a doctor who learns she’s not only part of a fated witch family but their heiress, and she’s magical herself. Just like The Princess Diaries, right?

Sleepy Hollow
Obviously, a show about Sleepy Hollow is eventually going to get into witchcraft. Ichabod Crane’s wife, Katrina, is a witch who appears in the first two seasons, and there is magic and mayhem throughout. (Full disclosure: I did not keep up with this show for reasons that may become apparent as you get to the later seasons, but don’t let that stop you! The first two seasons are great!)
Good Witch
Witches, but make it Hallmark Channel! Watch this series for pure, cozy, well-intentioned magic and gentle drama.
Disenchantment
Not to be confused with the sequel to Enchanted, this animated sitcom set in a medieval fantasy realm. The main character, Bean, learns to harness magical powers over the course of the series.
The Worst Witch
I’m being 100 percent serious when I tell you this is my comfort show. It’s like…a pure-as-a-cinnamon-roll show about young witches at boarding school with low stakes and adorable hijinks.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
The Riverdale spin-off is way darker than you may have expected from the mind that brought you Jughead Jones’s “I’m a weirdo” speech. But while Sabrina Spellman may rock a conservative sweater, the show goes hard on Satan worship and classic horror homages.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch
The original adaptation of the Archie comics character is almost a completely different show, so they’re both getting a spot on the list. This one is basically a sitcom, and we love it.
Charmed
No judgment if you’re a fan of the reboot, but we’ve gotta give it up for the OG Charmed. Along with Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the ’90s were a great time for magical ladies on television.
WandaVision
Wanda Maximoff may be the Scarlet Witch, but she’s not the only witch who turned up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first…sitcom?
Merlin
Okay, so it’s really more of a show about a wizard…but there are witches in it, and Merlin is one of the most famous fictional magicians of all time.
American Horror Story: Coven
Not only is this season of AHS all about Salem, but it also gave us the “surprise, bitch” meme. It’s an iconic season of television for so many reasons.
