These Are the TV Shows You’ll Be Watching This Fall

Not too long ago, fall television used to mean something extra special. It’s when all of your favorite shows would come back. Like, all of them. A show premiering in February or April was cause for a fandom meltdown because it was a sign that the network was trying to bury it. Now, because of streaming and a hodge-podge of other reasons, good television happens all year round. But that doesn’t mean that aren’t some special shows returning to us for a sweater weather welcome. There are even some new shows making a splash! These are the shows we’re looking forward to in fall 2024.
A few networks (looking at you, streamers) might still surprise us with a fall release. And there may be a show that's not currently on our radar but gets popular in a major way. You never know with television. So until we get more information, these are the anticipated and/or returns from late August to November that have caught our eye.
Only Murders in the Building Season 4
Release date: August 27
It feels so rare to have a show that’s (a) this universally beloved, (b) renewed consistently, (c) out every year instead of every two or more years. I can’t wait for the new season! You know we’re going to be obsessed with the case and laughing our asses off as well.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2
Release date: August 29
Fall is kind of the perfect time for Rings of Power because it has major cottage core vibes. This show is a deep dive for Tolkien fans into the story of that dang ring Frodo was so desperate to chuck into a volcano. Although there’s kind of the baddest bad guy of all lurking in the shadows, it’s very earnest too.
English Teacher
Release date: September 2
This new series on FX and Hulu may take place at a public school, but it's not an Abbott Elementary rip-off at all. (You wouldn't say that 9-11 is the same as other shows about cops and firefighters, would you?) The sitcom has been gaining popularity because it, like, tells actual jokes. Don't miss out!
The Perfect Couple
Release date: September 5
It wouldn't be a season of television without at least one show about a rich family with a dark secret, would it? The Perfect Couple is based on the Elin Hilderbrand book and boasts an all-star cast including Liev Schrieber, Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, and of course Nicole Kidman.
Emily in Paris Season 4 Part 2
Release date: September 12
She’s baaaaack. The first half of the season kicked off in August, and the second is now live a month later. We really did need a minute to cool off between parts 1 and 2.
Three Women
Release date: September 13
I am completely obsessed with this series on Starz based on Lisa Taddeo's book about female desire. I hope you feel the same. Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise, and Gabrielle Creevey are amazing in it.
The Golden Bachelorette
Release date: September 18
Alright, let's try this again! After The Golden Bachelor it's only fair for Bachelor Nation to switch it up for the spin-off's second season.
The Penguin
Release date: September 19
This series is a spin-off of The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, although R-Patz is unlikely to make an appearance. Instead, we’ve got Colin Farrell under an entire Sephora’s worth of makeup and Cristina Millioti. It seems like less of a comic book show and more of a mafia show set in a comic book world, but that’s fine by us.
American Crime Story: Aaron Hernandez
Release date: September 17
Josh Andrés Rivera (West Side Story, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) plays the infamous football player in the latest installment of this true crime dramatization on FX.
Agatha All Along
Release date: September 18
Remember WandaVision? I’m an MCU girlie through thick and thin, and I cannot friggin’ wait for this show about Kathryn Hahn’s chaotic character and her coven of witches, played by Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zameta, and Patti LuPone.
Brilliant Minds
Release date: September 23
My Heroes-loving heart is sooo happy to see Zachary Quinto on an NBC drama. The show is about an eccentric doctor who takes drastic measures to put himself in his patient's shoes in order to understand what's going on with them.
9-1-1 and 9-1-1 Lonestar
Release dates: September 26 and September 23, respectively
Ryan Murphy really is in his Dick Wolf/Shonda Rhimes era with a procedural and a spin-off that both know how to get people talking.
Nobody Wants This
Release date: September 26
Sorry... Adam Brody and Kristin Bell in a rom-com Netflix series? That sound you heard was every millennial stampeding towards their television. He's a hot rabbi. She's a sex podcaster. Could I make it any more obvious?
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon—The Book of Carol
Release date: September 29
Okay, ignore the fact that this is thee most obnoxious title of all time. (It’s just Daryl Dixon season 2! That’s all it is!) Anyway, I enjoyed the first season of this spin-off, which is basically The Walking Dead meets Emily in Paris. It’s cool to see what the familiar TWD zombie apocalypse looks like in another country. Some things are more relaxed, and others are way more intense....
Heartstopper Season 3
Release date: October 3
What I love about Heartstopper is that while the romance sometimes threatens to give you a toothache (it’s soooo sweet), the show is not afraid to get real. It just happens to do so in an empathetic way. Shocking stuff, really!
The Franchise
Release date: October 6
Armando Iannucci, the satirist behind Veep and Avenue 5, has a new show coming out about the making of a superhero franchise like the MCU or the DCEU. I cannot wait. Drag us, please!
Superman & Lois
Release date: October 7
The final season of the final CW series based on DC comics characters is finally here. End of an era, much? This is devastating!
Abbott Elementary
Release date: October 9
THANK GOD. I could not wait to find out what happens with Janine and Gregory much longer.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft
Release date: October 10
Looking for a little animated action? This show might fill the Saturday Morning Cartoon–shaped hole in your life. Fun fact: It is a sequel to the 2018 video game, story-wise. I don’t 100 percent know how that works, but I trust them.
Tracker
Release date: October 13
The hot new series is back for a second season. Yay! Who will Colter Shaw, played by This Is Us alum Justin Hartley, track next? Between this and new seasons of Ghosts and my favorite new show Elsbeth on October 17, CBS is kind of cooking this fall.
