Madonna and Julia Garner were spotted last week by Deuxmoi seemingly shooting scenes together, it forced us all to remember that, at one point, Julia was supposed to be playing the pop star on the big screen in a highly anticipated biopic. After actual years, could it finally be filming? As with anything involving Madonna, it felt like a fever dream. But Madonna just verified it herself by posting photos on her Instagram page featuring her and Julia showing off their dance moves. Apparently, though, it wasn’t for the big screen. It’s actually for Seth Rogen’s Emmy-winning TV series, The Studio.
While none of the photos actually show the co-creator of the series himself, there was a slate/clapper board that gave away the title of the show. Another special surprise in one photo revealed…*checks notes* Donald Glover, who somehow took time off of his wild Super Mario Galaxy Movie schedule to film for the TV show. Is he playing himself? Is he playing Childish Gambino? We’re going to have to wait to find out, unfortunately.
We absolutely need to know how Seth Rogen made this happen. What sort of blackmail does he have on pop and film royalty to get them to join this show? We’re still not over him getting Martin Scorsese on the small-screen, only to “cancel” his film for a Kool-Aid movie. There’s the Apple backing, of course, which definitely helps. But it is hard to convince me that Hollywood is finally so down to have fun again that this mashup of worlds happened.
Just last September, Julia told W Magazine that the biopic was still, “a work in progress.” Maybe this is their last ditch effort to get the backing that they need to make it happen? Either way, I will be tuning in.
