56 Days wrapped up its eight addictive episodes in a pretty neat bow, but the last moments of the finale were filled with several unexpected twists. And if you found yourself in a state of ???? about where things stand with Oliver, Ciara, Lee, and Karl, we're breaking things down beat-by-beat.
Who Is the Body in the Bathtub?
Ciara and Oliver are minding their business eating breakfast after finally spilling all their mutual secrets, when Dr. Toxler shows up to Oliver's apartment and wastes no time trying to blackmail him. Turns out he's been holding onto evidence that Oliver killed his high school friend Paul, and he wants millions of dollars to stay silent.
But Ciara fixes that problem by hitting Dr. Toxler over the head with a statue (guess she and Oliver are even now, murder wise?) and her sister helps them come up with a plan to stage the scene and melt down his body into a pile of hard-to-identify goo.
What Happens to Lee and Karl?
Lee tells her boss that she was hooking up with drug dealer Linus Finch (who, reminder, was buying her silence in the form of fancy presents). Somehow she's not fired, and on top of that, Karl forgives Lee and they stay partners.
Oh, and you know how Karl stole Linus Finch's necklace? Yeah, well...
Finch Gets Framed for Dr. Toxler's Murder
A detective working the case happens to find the necklace among evidence at the crime scene and Finch gets arrested—meaning Oliver and Ciara are off the hook. Unclear how they came up with enough proof tying him to the murder, but let's just suspend our disbelief and assume DNA evidence isn't a thing on this show.
What Happens to Ciara and Oliver?
The show ends with Oliver and a newly blonde Ciara enjoying the beach with their baby boy Shane (named after her brother, who Oliver murdered). It seems like they're still living off the grid to protect their peace, but Ciara makes sure to send her mom a casual $2 million.
Is the Show's Ending Different from the Book?
Yes! Like, completely. In the novel, Ciara finds out the truth about Oliver's past way later, and then kills him in revenge. In other words, he's the body in the bathtub. And she gets away with it!
The! End!
