POV: you've just watched Stranger Things and you have literally no idea whether or not Nancy and Jonathan are still together. As a reminder, these two had a heart-to-heart during their near death experience almost drowning in a sea of goo. And after airing out all their truths / secrets / lies, Jonathan revealed that he'd been planning to propose to Nancy. And then, instead of asking her to marry him, he went with an un-proposal—which she happily accepted.
It was a sweet moment and lord knows we love seeing them in a good place, but...are they still together? According to the Duffer brothers, nope.
"That's a breakup," Matt Duffer explained to People. "They are broken up."
Matt added that he and Ross Duffer have known about the breakup for "a while," and said "It's hard to recall when exactly that idea came, but I think us — and the writers — all felt that Nancy needed to end up on her own and be independent and have an opportunity to find herself. I mean, how many people wind up with their girlfriend or boyfriend that they met in high school?"
This also seemingly implies that Nancy and Steve are also a no-go, which is a bummer for those of us who were rooting for them. Of course, thinking far into the future for any of these characters feels a little futile at this point considering they're out here risking it all to save the planet and we don't know who's going to make it out alive!
