I truly respect the stretch of a committed stan’s imagination. With an agenda, free time, and a CapCut account, a fan can spin narratives so random they almost feel inspiring—through cinematic edits that rival your favorite 90-minute romance. Such is the case with The Summer I Turned Pretty devotees who’ve decided that Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) isn’t meant to be with Belly, or even Lacie Barone (the girl he had the gall to hook up with in Cabo). No: there’s a passionate TikTok community convinced Jeremiah’s soulmate is Harry Potter’s resident antagonist, Draco Malfoy.
I’ll admit, I was half-asleep when I first saw a Jraco edit (Jeremiah + Draco, pronounced “Jah-raco”) and dismissed it as a trick of my drowsy mind. But once is a fluke; twice is a pattern. After a supercut of Draco and Jeremiah set to TYRANT by Beyoncé crossed my feed, I dove into an active community eager to pair characters from wildly different universes. You might ask how this storyline began. The earliest post I could trace came from @jerebear in late June: in that origin-story edit, Jeremiah catches flak from Conrad for cheating on Belly (as he tends to do). But instead of stepping out with Lacie Barone, his forbidden liaison is with Draco Malfoy.
In this timeline, Jeremiah falls deeply in love with Draco, and is left heartbroken when Draco cheats on him with none other than Simon from Alvin and the Chipmunks (as detailed in this edit.) There’s also a version where Jeremiah cheats on Draco with JoJo Siwa—who’s only been roped into this fabricated drama because of her 2022 Draco Malfoy Halloween costume, which, I must say, was very well executed.
So why Draco, you might ask? Maybe it’s because he and Jeremiah are both blond villains in their respective universes, or because Draco is already such a staple in fan fiction. It’s not the first time Draco's been dropped in a non-canon couple. The fanfic site AO3 is overflowing with Dramione (Draco/Hermione) fics—practically a genre unto themselves. Some, like Manacled and DMATMOOBL (Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love), have even been picked up by legitimate publishers. In fact, on TSITP, Steven, Belly's brother, is canonically a Dramione (Draco/Hermione) shipper/fanfic reader, which Jeremiah loves to give him grief for.
This Jraco TikTok phenomenon feels like a natural graduation from the Wattpad stories that haunted the early 2010s (see the iconic Harry Styles/Barack Obama ship, which has also found new life on TikTok). Bizarre as it is, the Jraco narrative should satisfy fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty who are tired of the show’s canon love triangle (for the record: the clear choice is Conrad). And while the intentions behind the Jraco narrative don't seem quite as sincere as its predecessors in the Draco fanfic space, its absurdity is the main draw. Isn’t it special to feel like you’re a part of an inside joke with strangers—one that might slightly concern the editors you pitch a whole story about it to? Under #Jraco, I’ve seen real camaraderie among open-minded fans who welcome the concept’s inanity and encourage it. We should embrace community wherever we can find it—even in the depths of JracoTok.
So much exists outside of our control: Inflation. The administration’s gradual theft of our human rights. Global warming. Why not take the reins of our favorite TV show’s plot and absolutely run wild with it?
