Soooo, a lot happened in the first two episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three. Not only did Belly and Jeremiah get engaged, Belly learned that he pulled a Ross from Friends and cheated while they were "oh a break." However! There's some debate as to whether it was technically cheating since they were split at the time, and Jenny Han is here to clear things up. Sorta.
Speaking to People, the author and showrunner said it's "debatable whether or not that's considered cheating or not. Because they technically were broken up. It's really how different people [interpret it]."
"I think that for me, as the creator of the world and the characters, I have to have empathy for all of them," she added, noting that it's important to "see their side and walk in their shoes and feel protective of them. So I do. For all of the characters."
Whether or not you think Jeremiah cheated, one thing is certain: he wasn't honest with Belly about what happened during their break, and continued to keep it a secret once they got back together, which isn't okay. And yes, I realize I am taking a passionate stance on fictional characters!
Either way, the pseudo-cheating will be sure to have a ripple effect as the season progresses and Belly + Jeremiah plan their wedding, so stay tuned.
