Only Murders in the Building season 3 has officially come and gone, meaning you're likely totally wondering whether the hit series is set to come back for season 4.
After all, don't you just hate it when mysteries wrap up? There's that initial rush when you finally learn who did it, and either have your suspicions confirmed or your mind blown. But then it's like...what now? At least with murder mysteries on television, you have another season to look forward to...or, rather, you hope you do. Here's what we know about Only Murders in the Building season 4!
So is Only Murders in the Building coming back for season 4?
It sure is! Hulu announced on October 3, 2023 that Only Murders in the Building will indeed get a season 4, posting the news with a snap of our favorite sleuths.
A refresher: The show, which premiered in 2021, was renewed for season 2 on September 14, 2021, and then again for season 3 on July 11, 2022.
When will Only Murders season 4 come out?
The show's teaser trailer was revealed over at Disney upfronts presentation on May 2024 and it revealed that the show will not only be coming out on August 27th (aka tomorrow!!!!) but also gave us a first look at what new wild stories we can expect:
What will Only Murders season 4 be about?
Will the next death be someone we know or a newcomer in the Arconia? Guess we'll have to wait to find out! The same goes for the cast, but given the renewal announcement initially included the main three protagonists—aka Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez—it feels safe to assume they will return. (And even if tragedy does strike our trio and one of them is the titular murder victim, they can be brought back to life through flashbacks.)
Co-creator John Hoffman previously teased that season 4 will explore the theme of consequences. "I think the idea of what you create is a thing you put out to the world, and sometimes you can’t be prepared for the repercussions of what potentially the world does with your thing, and how they feel about it," he told The Hollywood Reporter when the season was announced back in October. "That’s a challenging line to walk, and sometimes you have to face it in that way. So, the podcast and everything else that’s happened, and what it all means, and what it could have been meaning all along. That’s a really interesting world to look at for these three who stepped in that way."
Additionally, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich teased a brand new setting for the show in season 4. During an interview with Deadline at the 2024 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour, he mused, "Well, I'm very excited to see Steve, Martin, and Selena take a little break from the apartment building and come to Los Angeles."
"So in the same way that John Hoffman used the canvas of Broadway to tell what I think was one of the most unique seasons you’ve ever seen, the same unique Only Murders take will be applied to Los Angeles, which I’m really excited about," he continued.
Is anyone new joining? Or are more familiar faces coming back?
In news you were more than likely hoping for, Meryl Streep is confirmed to return as Loretta Durkin! Although, whether we'll catch her in LA still remains to be seen, according to Variety. Meanwhile, Molly Shannon will be joining in on the fun for the first time as a "high powered Los Angeles businesswoman who finds herself drawn into the world of the investigation in New York."
Michael Cyril Crieghton, Jane Lynch, and the new Oscar winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph will also all be back!
Other famous faces set to join the show? Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, Schitt's Creek's Eugene Levy, and Zach Galifianakis are among a whole host of other iconic actors. In fact, they'll actually be playing film versions of Mabel, Charles, and Oliver as a Hollywood studio films a movie about the podcast.
