We can’t stop dancing to Harry Styles’ new album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. The Grammy winner dropped his Harry’s House follow-up on Friday, March 6, along with a cheeky music video for his new song, “American Girls.” Throughout the visual, Harry is seen directing and shooting scenes for an action-packed project with a stunt double.
While the vivacious video brings on all types of fun, the former One Direction member actually admitted the song’s meaning is pretty “lonely” and stems from his desire to settle down and start a family.
“It’s actually quite a lonely song in a lot of ways,” Harry said of the track during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, explaining that he was inspired after watching his “three closest friends get married.”
He continued, “Actually seeing them trust…and risk something to find something truly fulfilling in a way that isn’t as shiny and, on paper, as exciting as watching them get married… I was like, I’m single, so I’m having all the fun, and ‘American Girls’ is actually about watching them get married, and there just is a magic when you find the right person that you want to be with.”
That being said, let’s take a deeper look at Harry’s lyrics and analyze their potential meaning, based on what he’s said.

[Verse 1]
Right at home
With perfect timing
A face that knows
Her perfect lighting
’Cause time will show
That you should try it
Those American girls
You spend your life with
From the jump, Harry paints a picture of a lover he could potentially spend the rest of his life with. After watching his closest friends get married, it seems that the singer is weighing out his options and considering a future with an American girl. (Does this mean I have a shot? Asking for a friend.)
[Chorus]
“I’ve known you for ages,” it’s all that I’ve heard
My friends are in love with American girls
I’ve seen it in stages all over the world
My friends are in love with American girls
“I’ve known you for ages,” it’s all that I’ve heard
My friends are in love with American girls
(American girls)
During his chat with Zane Lowe, Harry admitted that he “really looked at life from a bird’s eye view” and pondered on what he “actually wants” when it comes to a serious partnership.
“I have all these things around me all the time. It’s hard to pull those things in without making space for them. So if I stop everything, then I get to decide what I want to bring back in. Like, what are really the things that I want in my life?” he explained, adding that his busy touring schedule over the years caused him to reflect on “making space” for settling down.
He continued, “I had a real honest conversation with myself about, okay, in five years, what do I want my life to look like? And then how do I make changes to aim at that? I don’t want to be the guy who’s on his own but was like, ‘Oh, I really did it.’ I want to be fulfilled, and I want to be in great relationships with people. I want to have great friendships with people. I want a family. I want these things. It just allowed me to go like, okay, what do I have to do to create space to allow these things to happen? I can’t just expect them to just happen to me.”
[Verse 2]
Her sweet eyes
Your temptations
Don’t deny
Her frustrations
Just spend your life
With those American girls
Elsewhere in his interview with Zane, Harry emphasized how important it is to find the “right person” to settle down with.
“That’s part of why you choose that person, is because they hold you accountable to the person that they know you want to be. I think accepting flaws and stuff is like, yes, having understanding is wonderful, but you know that I want to be better than that. So when you challenge me on something…it’s a gift to me, actually,” Harry said of his ideal partner.
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
(American girls, American girls)
American girls
All over the world
[Chorus]
[Outro]
American girls, American girls
American girls, American girls
