Could a Billie Eilish concert film be heading to theaters? Fans think so after she announced an upcoming project with Oscar-winning director James Cameron during her first of four sold-out shows at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena on July 19.
“So you may have noticed that there are more cameras than usual in here,” Billie told the audience during her performance. “Basically, I can’t say much about it, but what I can say is that I’m working on something very, very special with somebody named James Cameron...and it’s going to be in 3D.”
The Grammy and Oscar winner revealed that the iconic director behind blockbuster hits like Titanic and the Avatar franchise happened to be among the fans in the crowd.
“Take that as you will, and these four shows here in Manchester, you and me are part of a thing that I am making with him. He's in this audience somewhere, just saying,” she shared before jokingly revealing that she’ll be outfit repeating for her next few shows on tour.
Billie added, “So don't mind that, and also I'll probably be wearing this exact outfit for like four days in a row.”
Naturally, the internet went crazy as the announcement made waves on social media, and fans are theorizing that the artist and director are joining forces for a 3D concert film following the success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.
“The way no one else is giving music, visuals, & literal cinema, oh billie the greatest artist of all time you are!” one fan wrote in response to the news, while another added, “this might clear every concert film we’ve ever had, oh we are seated!”
Others theorized that some crowd work might be featured in the project, as a member of Billie’s team allegedly passed audience members a camera during her show on July 19.
“Just saying… billie’s team gave my friends a camcorder and told them to record their faces during the show… something crazy is about to happen (imagine it’s a new song),” one social post read ahead of the announcement.
Billie has been on the road in support of her Grammy-nominated third album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, since last fall. Her shows will continue with dates across Europe in Japan before she kicks off a second North American leg in Miami on October 9.
While other details surrounding her collaboration with James Cameron are slim, and Billie hasn’t announced exactly what’s in store just yet, we already know we’re ready for whatever comes from the legendary duo.
