Ever since Demi Lovato teased a rock rerecording of her ~iconic~ bisexual anthem “Cool for the Summer,” I instantly knew I wanted more of this energy from the Camp Rock alumnus. Thankfully, she’s dropping a whole album with rock-infused reimaginations of her greatest hits, REVAMPED, on September 15. Joyous day!
Of course, Demi brought on the electric guitars and grunge aesthetic during her performance of “Cool for the Summer,” “Heart Attack,” and “Sorry Not Sorry” at the 2023 VMAs. As if these songs didn’t make me emo enough already as a kid? I see you, Demi, and I hear your beautifully matured vocals that call back to your pop-punk roots.
This marks the 14-time nominee’s first VMAs performance in 6 years. Demi last hit the stage for a soulful performance of Tell Me You Love Me’s lead single, “Sorry Not Sorry.” In 2015, the multihyphenate made her VMAs debut with a performance of “Cool for the Summer” alongside Iggy Azalea. This year, Demi is up for Moon People in the Best Pop and Video for Good categories.
REVAMPED comes a few days after the VMAs and includes rock versions of Demi’s biggest hits like “Confident” and “Heart Attack.” The album also features other rock and pop punk legends like Slash and The Maine. In a July 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Demi opened up about arranging her hit pop songs while supporting her rock album, HOLY FVCK, on tour.
“When I got home from tour, I was like, ‘Why don’t I just record those versions and release them?’” Demi said before adding, “I love revisiting these past moments in my career. We’ve done a great job of reenvisioning the songs, and I’m really happy with them.” While making REVAMPED, Demi revealed that she didn’t want the songs to lose their “familiarity” and that she “changed the melody a little bit in certain spots” to try and hit higher notes than the original versions.
