- Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" specifically has quotes around the title, and she just explained why.
- The director says the quotes are there, in part, because "I can't say I'm making Wuthering Heights. It's not possible."
- "Wuthering Heights" hits theaters on February 13, 2026.
Ever since "Wuthering Heights" dropped its Gone With the Wind-inspired poster, the internet has been busy speculating about why quotes were included around the title. Ahem:
And it looks like we finally have answers! Director Emerald Fennell told Fandango, "I think it's a lot of things, but I think that primarily because the book means so much to me and it means so, so much to so many people. And I think doing a lot of talking to the Brontë Parsonage Museum and to other people who love this book too, because it means a lot to me. It's very important that everyone who loves it as much as I do feels almost a part of it, I guess."
She added, "The thing for me is that you can't adapt a book as dense and complicated and difficult as this book. I can't say I'm making Wuthering Heights. It's not possible. What I can say is I'm making a version of it. There's a version that I remembered reading that isn't quite real. And there's a version where I wanted stuff to happen that never happened. And so it is 'Wuthering Heights', and it isn't."
Understood!
