Let’s be real: indie films are having a major moment rn, and Anora is definitely at the forefront of their renaissance thanks to its awards buzz. Sean Baker’s Brooklyn-based story swept the Oscars last night. ICYMI, Anora won Best Picture, Sean took home the award for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Achievement in Film Editing, and breakout star Mikey Madison won the award for Best Actress. Anora was up for six awards including Best Picture and won five of them.
The flick follows Ani, who gets her own Cinderella story when she meets Ivan (who happens to be the son of an oligarch, nbd) during one of her shifts at the strip club. Their unlikely love story takes a turn when Ivan’s Russian parents come to New York to get their marriage annulled.
That being said! Now’s the perfect time to tune into the movie, because clearly the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has agreed, it's major.
