• Fans have theorized that Taylor Swift’s song, “Dorothea,” is about her longtime friendship with Selena Gomez since she dropped it in 2020.
  • The song includes lyrics like “You got shiny friends since you left town / A tiny screen’s the only place I see you now.”
  • During an appearance on Benny Blanco and Lil Dicky’s Friends Keep Secrets web series, Selena clarified whether or not she was the muse behind the track.

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez’s longtime friendship is truly the gift that keeps giving. Before they were billionaires, the girlies met when they dated Joe Jonas and Nick Jonas as teenagers. Nearly 20 years—and countless Instagram photo dumps, birthday cards, and songs—later, their friendship has never been stronger, as Sel just dropped a bombshell that casually confirmed a major Taylena fan theory.

During an appearance on Benny Blanco and Lil Dicky’s new Friends Keep Secrets web series, Selena confirmed that she was the muse behind Taylor’s fan-favorite song, “dorothea.”

“It’s very clear that you literally connect with Taylor’s music on a different level,” David Burd, aka Lil Dicky, told Selena during the episode.

She responded, “A million percent…Well, ‘dorothea’ is about me, one of her songs.”

She continued, “I feel like a lot of huge moments that were self-defining, from relationships to family to love to hate, to all of it in between, we were figuring it out because I was 15 and she was 18. We didn’t really know what was going on, and so we’ve never seen each other any differently.”

The sweet ode to Selena, which is featured on Taylor’s 2020 album, evermore, not only rhymes with her name, but alludes to her as “a queen sellin’ dreams, sellin’ makeup and magazines.”

Of course, this alludes to Sel’s uber-successful brand, Rare Beauty, and the fact that she’s graced tons of magazines (including Cosmo) over the course of her career.

In the song, Taylor also sings about how “you got shiny friends since you left town / A tiny screen’s the only place I see you now,” which could refer to her oftentimes long-distance friendship with Selena.

After nearly 20 years of friendship, Sel gushed that the “coolest part” was seeing both her and Taylor end up with “good dudes.”

“It’s absolutely unbelievable to come from 17 years of friendship, from multiple heartbreaks and love stories and fun stories in life... we both ended up, fortunately, being engaged around the same time,” she said during the Friends Keep Secrets convo.

All this to say…the Taylena Hive stays winning! Now seems like a great time to listen to “dorothea” for the millionth time.
