- Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh played Madame Morrible in Jon M. Chu’s film adaptations of Wicked.
- The second movie in the franchise, Wicked: For Good, was notably shut out from this year’s Oscar nominations.
- Michelle has officially reacted to Wicked: For Good’s Oscar snubs. Here’s what she had to say.
Michelle Yeoh rightfully earned her first Oscar and made history as the second woman of color to win Best Actress, thanks to her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Since then, she’s taken on more iconic roles, including Madame Morrible in Jon M. Chu’s film adaptations of the beloved Broadway musical, Wicked.
So, when the second movie in the franchise, Wicked: For Good, was notably shut out from this year’s Oscar nominations, Michelle took notice. She reacted to the snub during an interview with Variety on February 12, saying, “I’m not surprised. I am in shock! I really am.”
The first film received 10 nominations at the coveted awards show, including nods for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in major categories like Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. The only awards Wicked ended up winning went to Paul Tazewell for Best Costume Design and Nathan Crowley for Best Production Design.
When it comes to this year’s snubs, Michelle added, “I think sometimes the problem is that people think, ‘Oh, you already got so much with the first one, let other people have a chance.’ But then it feels like, ‘No, come on!’”
She explained she was “truly, truly very disappointed” that Wicked: For Good wasn’t recognized because “It’s such a beautiful, well-made movie.”
“Paul for costume design, hair, and makeup. If you compare it, it should be there,” she shared. “For Jon Chu, for Alice Brooks, for the set design. It’s not the replica of the first one. It’s more elaborate, and there are many more new destinations in Wicked: For Good.”
We hear you, Michelle. Dare we say she truly deserves her own Oscar for her “MM, flip it around, Wicked Witch” bit from the Wicked press tour?
