ICYMI, he won a bronze medal at the men’s 20km individual event on Tuesday, February 10, where he admitted to cheating on his ex-girlfriend during a live TV interview. A day after his ex reacted to his gesture, Sturla admits that he “deeply regrets” airing his laundry out on international TV.
In a statement from the Norwegian team shared with People, he said he shouldn’t have gotten so personal “on what was a festive day for Norwegian biathlon.”
“I am not quite myself today, and I am not thinking clearly. My apologies go to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after the gold,” his statement read. “It also goes to my ex-girlfriend, who involuntarily ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well.”
As for his ex’s reaction? During an interview with VG, she said his cheating was “hard to forgive, even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world.”
She added, “I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it. We have had contact and he is aware of my opinions on this. [I am grateful] to my family and friends who have embraced me and supported me during this time. Also to everyone else who has thought of me and sympathized, without knowing who I am.”
^^^ This all came about after Sturla won his bronze medal and told NRK, “There is someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today. Six months ago, I met the love of my life, the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and was unfaithful.”
“I told her about it a week ago,” he continued. “It’s been the worst week of my life. I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.”
At this rate, we’re staying tuned for more as it comes…
