The 2026 Winter Olympics are in full force, which means a bunch of drama (both in and out of the competition) has followed. From Penisgate to the Minions figure skater finally getting clearance to hit the ice with Pharrell’s music, so much has happened. And the Opening Ceremony was only last Friday!
That being said, there’s more delicious chaos where that came from. The latest Olympics drama actually comes after Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid won a bronze medal for the men’s 20km individual event. During a live TV interview after his win, Sturla admitted it was “the worst week of [his] life”…and then admitted to cheating on his ex-girlfriend.
He didn’t celebrate his win for long, as he broke down in tears while confessing his infidelity.
“There is someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today,” he said during a post-event interview with NRK. “Six months ago, I met the love of my life, the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and was unfaithful.”
While he didn’t reveal the identity of the woman he cheated on, he left a message for her and any young fans watching.
“I told her about it a week ago,” he explained about his affair. “It’s been the worst week of my life. I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.”
As for why he fessed up after his major milestone, Sturla said he believes people should own up to their mistakes.
“I try to be a good role model, and I did something stupid,” he dished. “You have to admit when you do something you can’t stand for and hurt someone you love so much.”
Later in the day, Sturla shared that he hadn’t seen any reactions from his ex during a press conference. Per the BBC, he said, “I’m happy, because maybe she hasn’t seen it. Maybe she will see it at the right time.”
“I hope I don’t make anything worse for her, but maybe it can help,” he continued. “I don’t know, I hope there’s a happy ending.”
Naturally, the internet had its thoughts about his bold confession. “I don’t condone his actions, but I certainly admire his humility to admit his mistake to the entire world and then offer such a sincere apology,” one person wrote on social media, adding, “Even Olympic champions are human beings like the rest of us.”
Another pointed out that his comments seemed contradictory with his actions, writing, “But you literally didn’t only have eyes for her…”
And, as Sturla’s message comes right in time for Valentine’s Day, someone else said the gesture wasn’t as romantic as some people might think. “It may sound romantic, but he just embarrassed her on the world stage. Bro is cooked,” they shared.
So what we’re gathering here is that even Olympians have their bouts of relationship drama!
