Nearly two months after officially losing their royal titles, former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson have stepped out for their first public appearance. It was a private family affair as they attended the christening of their granddaughter, Athena Mapelli Mozzi, at St. James’s Palace in London on Friday, December 12. According to Hello!, Andrew and Sarah arrived separately for the service and left around noon.
They were invited by their daughter, Princess Beatrice, despite the fact that other Royals, including Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, were in attendance.
“You’re Beautiful” singer James Blunt and his wife, Sofia Wellesley, also attended the service, as People reports that the latter is one of Athena’s godparents alongside Princess Nina of Greece and Denmark.
Ahead of the event, an insider told the Daily Mail, “It’s going to be a royal occasion, but everyone is dreading the thought of seeing Andrew there.”
Princess Beatrice reportedly kept a close relationship with Fergie while her relationship with Andrew is “more strained” amid his scandalous ties to convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
“Beatrice has, of course, invited her father. But things are not warm between them,” the source told the Daily Mail. “However, she’s worried about him. He’s going through a low ebb with his mental health, and she recognizes that he dotes on his grandchildren and it would be cruel to deprive him of the chance to attend the christening.”
The christening marked the first major public appearance for the two since they attended the funeral of the Duchess of Kent at Westminster Cathedral in September 2025. The following month, King Charles officially stripped Andrew and Fergie of their royal titles after facing scrutiny for his younger brother’s ties to Epstein.
