• Tate McRae and The Kid LAROI broke up in July 2025 after nearly a year of dating.
  • In the aftermath of their split, LAROI released “A COLD PLAY,” which seemingly alluded to his romance with Tate, and she fired back with “TIT FOR TAT.”
  • Tate spoke about their breakup for the first time since dropping “TIT FOR TAT” and accepted that LAROI is “going to write songs” about their relationship.

Tate McRae’s “TIT FOR TAT” is only one of the scathing tracks on the deluxe version of her album, SO CLOSE TO WHAT???, and it’s gained a dedicated following that includes none other than Taylor Swift. At the time of its release, Tater Tots were quick to theorize that the song may be a response to The Kid LAROI’s “A COLD PLAY,” which dropped two months after their reported split.

On the track, LAROI muses, “Who was I to think that I could fix you, baby? / Who would I be if I didn’t miss you, baby?” while Tate’s “TIT FOR TAT” fires back with, “Fix your fucking self / Kiss my ass for that.”

In her latest cover story for Rolling Stone, Tate has broken her silence on the whole situation after the growing success of her chart-topping hit. The Grammy-nominated singer admitted that at first, “it was really scary and overwhelming” to write and release the (sort-of) diss track aimed at her ex.

“I would never talk that way, even about my friends’ lives. I didn’t realize how much it would affect me, the public knowing my private life—because no one knows the full story of anything, ever,” Tate told the publication, explaining that the media covering their split added another layer to her heartbreak. She added, “I also hate people painting a situation that’s worse than it is.”

She’s also aware that, as artists, they’re going to process their emotions, and she’s come to expect that her ex will inevitably drop music inspired by their time together.

“What I’ve had to realize is that he’s going to write songs and I’m going to write songs, and that’s our way of expressing ourselves. That’s our art, that’s our job. And once it’s out there, it’s not mine anymore,” she shared.

Tate and LAROI—whose real name is Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard—started as friends before they dated from January 2024 to July 2025.

In August, the rapper claimed that he and the “Sports Car” singer were still on good terms following their breakup before they dropped their respective songs.
