Time to Casually Revisit Chris Martin’s Full Relationship History

In case you hadn't heard the latest in "Celebrity Couples We Didn't See Coming," Chris Martin and Sophie Turner are newly dating after getting together in September. And while this is Chris' first relationship (that we know of) since his split from Dakota Johnson, it's hardly his first time dating an A-lister. Check out his full relationship history!

Almost nothing is known about Chris and Lily's relationship. Like, we only know it was even a thing thanks to a circa 2015 Daily Mail article talking about his friendship with Kylie Minogue, which reads "When they met, he, a shy Devon boy, was getting over the end of his first serious romance with radio executive Lily Sobhani."

Chris and Gwyneth met backstage at a Coldplay concert in 2002 and got married a year later. They went on to have two kids (Apple and Moses) and then announced that they were "Consciously Uncoupling" in March 2014. They remain super close friends, and back in March, Gwyneth told Vanity Fair "It’s not quite brother, but we are complete family. He is there for me through anything, and vice versa."

She added, "It's quite beautiful. It continues to evolve. It feels much better when everybody can be together and people can let go of the more difficult, painful parts of what led to a divorce and focus on the things that led to the marriage in the first place. Once you fully let go of ‘We used to sleep in the same bed’ vibes, a world of possibility opens up."

Jennifer and Chris dated for a year, but their relationship was pretty up and down. They split up for good in 2015, when a source told People "Chris doesn’t really want the relationship to end, but he needs to be flexible so he can see his family as much as possible with his own work schedule. He’s crazy about Jen but wants to keep his own schedule and be able to do what he wants when he wants to do it."

Another insider noted that Jen was "tired of Chris being so noncommittal."

These two also had an on-again off-again relationship, and The Sun spoke to a source in August 2017 who said "Their crazy work schedules make it difficult to see each other sometimes and they drifted apart. But recently they have been making more of an effort and have decided to give things another shot. They have a lot of history together and don’t want to throw everything away. There are just a few more months left on Coldplay’s tour and then they will be able to spend more time together and work around Annabelle’s schedule."

Obviously, things didn't work out, because Chris was dating Dakota Johnson a few months later!

Dakota and Chris met through mutual friends and were official by December 2017, when a source told Us Weekly "Dakota and Chris are definitely dating. They’ve gotten to know each other really well and are very comfortable from one another. Chris sends Dakota his music to get her opinion. It’s more than just a fling."

The pair kept their relationship pretty private, but Dakota did tell Bustle "I love watching him. I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel like, I don’t know...I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing."

They dealt with split rumors throughout their relationship (which included a maybe-engagement), and then ended up calling it quits for good in June 2025.

A source told Page Six that Dakota "was sick of him dragging his feet on setting a date for the wedding" while another insider told Daily Mail that "Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much. Breakups aren't instant and they continued to breakup and makeup and sometimes things would work when they were away from each other, while they were working because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but then they'd get back together and little things just kept adding up to where they weren't right for each other anymore. Dakota is devastated that she isn't going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them."

The Daily Mail recently reported that Sophie and Chris Martin are quietly together, and went on a "secret date" about a week after Sophie and her aristocrat ex Perry Pearson ended their two-year relationship. Not much is known about their whole thing, but the outlet also dusted off footage of Sophie gushing over Chris in a birthday video organized by Joe Jonas, so...she's been a fan for a minute!
