- Keith Urban’s new reality competition show The Road premiered Sunday, Oct. 19, on CBS.
- Some fans suspect Keith’s performance of “Straight Line” in the premiere was hinting at his split form Nicole Kidman.
- Keith urged fans not to read into things at a recent concert.
For fans, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s abrupt separation and subsequent divorce came as a shock. But, based on his new reality show, it sounds like trouble had been brewing for some time. In the season premiere of The Road, Keith appeared to hint at his spilt from Nicole.
In what is either a devastating case of bad timing or a purposeful dig at his ex, Keith performed “Straight Line” in the premiere. Earlier this year in an Instagram post, the singer described the song as being about “wanting to break out of a soul-sucking routine that you might be stuck in: maybe a relationship, a job, with creativity, with yourself...” So, yeah, some fans are reading into the choice.
Of course, The Road, CBS’ new singing competition show, was filmed months before Keith and Nicole publicly announced their separation. So, was it a message to Nicole or just a coincidence? That’s for fans to decide.
Elsewhere in the show, Keith spoke about how difficult life on tour can be—another quote that is being linked to his divorce:
“When you wake up on a tour bus at 3:30 in the morning and you’re sick as a dog, you’re in the middle of nowhere and you’ve got to play your fifth show later that night, and you haven’t slept, and you miss your friends, and you’re missing your family, and you’re completely lonely and miserable and sick—and you say to yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’” Keith reflected on The Road. “The only answer can be: because this is what I’m born to do.”
Meanwhile, Keith appears to be very aware that his every move is being watched in the wake of the split. Last week, he reportedly addressed the gossip at a concert in Nashville before launching into a performance of “You’ll Think of Me,” another song that has been linked to his divorce. “This song, I’ve sang it this way a long time,” he told the crowd, per The Tennessean. “Stop reading into shit.”
