• During The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy, Prince William said that “change is on my agenda, change for good” when he becomes king—a comment interpreted as signaling possible shifts in royal policy.
  • A source told the National Examiner that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle viewed the remark as “a thinly veiled threat,” suggesting they could lose their royal titles once William ascends the throne.
  • Experts disagree on whether Wills can legally strip the Sussexes of their titles for good.

So, remember when Prince William appeared on Eugene Levy’s The Reluctant Traveler and said it was “safe to say that change is on my agenda, change for good” when he takes the crown? Apparently, King Charles wasn’t the only one rubbed the wrong way by his candid interview. A source for the National Examiner says the Sussexes also “see this sort of talk as a very thinly-veiled threat.”

Per the insider: “It’s pretty much accepted within the royal household that once he does take the throne, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will immediately get their titles yanked.” And—if the rumors are true—Wills could be taking the throne sooner rather than later.

The source continues, “He hasn’t said it publicly but the things he’s said in this interview, this big emphasis on how he will change things, is certainly being seen by a lot of people as him all but coming out and confirming that cutting Harry and Meghan completely loose is part of the plan.”

As a refresher: Even though Queen Elizabeth told Meghan and Harry to stop using HRH titles for public or commercial ventures when they stepped down from senior royal duties in 2020, they still retain their formal titles.

So back in April, when Meghan signed a gift basket note “with the Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex” (as was revealed on an episode of The Jamie Kern Lima Show), Wills apparently wasn’t too pleased.

“There is no way King William will stand for this,” a source told the Daily Beast at the time. “The titles will simply be removed when he is king. A way will be found.”

That! Said! There is some debate as to whether William can, in fact, strip Harry and Meghan of their titles. Former minister Norman Baker previously told the Daily Beast, “The law is not clear, but I have little doubt that as the bestowing of an HRH is in the gift of the monarch, the monarch could remove the HRH title. It would basically be the equivalent to an executive order in the U.S.”

Meanwhile, People previously reported that the removal of a dukedom (reminder, the Queen made Harry and Meghan Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they got married in 2018) would require “legislative action through an act of Parliament.”

In conclusion: TBD!
