- Taylor Swift's “CANCELLED!” lyrics include a reference to being “cloaked in Gucci.”
- Taylor has been wearing more Gucci in recent years, including outfits worn with Travis Kelce.
- Theories suggest this Gucci easter egg might also be proof that “CANCELLED!” is about Brittany Mahomes or Blake Lively.
It's been less than 24 hours since the release of The Life of a Showgirl and already everybody is trying to figure out who Taylor Swift's “CANCELLED!” is about. On the track, Taylor sings, “Good thing I like my friends cancelled / I like 'em cloaked in Gucci and in scandal.” And while some are pointing to Taylor Swift's Gucci easter egg in “CANCELLED!” as proof that the song is about a certain famous friend, others aren't so sure.
Taylor herself has frequently talked about getting “canceled” in 2016—it's what drove her Reputation era. And, while it might sound like she's singing about her famous friends who might have run afoul of public opinion, her outfit choices could suggest otherwise.
As pointed out by Page Six, Taylor has been wearing Gucci quite a bit in the last year or so. In early 2024, she wore a green, glittery Gucci number to the Golden Globes, and she's been favoring the designer for nights out in NYC. She even wore a Gucci skirt during her various UK radio appearances in the wake of her album's release.
Could the Gucci-cloaked friend Taylor is singing about actually be...herself? Or perhaps she's been wearing Gucci as a more general act of solidarity with her canceled friends. And, yes, there are multiple. As one fan on Twitter (@tntssoldier) pointed out, the song might not be about one specific person, but rather the cycle of scandal, forgiveness, and praise Taylor has found herself trapped in for years, with the public always weighing in on who she should or shouldn't be friends with.
Then again, the Gucci line in “CANCELLED!” could hint at a more specific canceled friend in Taylor's entourage. One popular theory is that “CANCELLED!” is about Brittany Mahomes. As noted by Us Weekly, Taylor and Travis made a rare public appearance in 2024, attending the US Open Tennis Championships clad head-to-toe in Gucci. Also present? Travis' teammate Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany, who has come under fire for her political beliefs.
Meanwhile, other outlets like the New York Post theorize that the Gucci name drop is actually a reference to Blake Lively, Taylor's (maybe former?) BFF. Blake has worked with Gucci in the past and was the face of the designer brand's Gucci Premiere fragrance in 2012.
Of course, it's also possible that Taylor just likes Gucci, but where's the fun in that?
