Now, this is the story all about how Will Smith got caught with AI crowds. Okay, maybe “got caught” is little hyperbolic. Fans are convinced Will Smith used AI crowds in a recent Instagram post from his concert in Scarborough after many noticed some odd blurring, odd movements from audience members, and a sign that magically changes midway through the video.
“My favorite part of tour is seeing you all up close. Thank you for seeing me too,” Will captioned the video shared a week ago. The clip includes some performance footage, but is mostly a tribute to the fans who attended with signs saying things like, “We love you Will,” and “‘You Can Make It’ helped me survive cancer. THX.”
Fans immediately spotted some anomalies in the crowd. “Why does half the crowd look possessed,” one commenter wrote. “Some of them had no eyes.”
Another said, “An AI crowd being posted on the official page is maaaad embarrassing.”
You can see some faces in the crowd clearly look unnatural, with big eyes and strangely proportioned faces (see the face in the bottom right corner of the first image below). Signs also change in the video, like this one that reads “LOV U FRESH PRINCE” and then becomes “LOV U FR6SH CRINCE.”
Clearly, this video has been tampered with in one way or another, but while many fans are jumping to the conclusion that Will might have used AI to fundamentally alter signs, I think the reality is far less nefarious. Based on other videos and photos from the concert, it looks like Will really did perform in front of a packed crowd. I’m guessing that, if AI was used, it was to clean up some images, color correct, and sharpen.
Will himself hasn’t commented on the AI crowd speculation, but let this be a lesson to all artists: If you use AI in your video, fans will notice, and they will not take it easy on you.
