The Oscars are just a few days away, and several lucky people are going to take home a little gold statue thanks to the decisions of The Academy's voters. But apparently there's already some behind-the-scenes drama thanks to said voters seemingly not doing their due diligence.
Variety spoke to anonymous Oscar voters about who they put on their ballots, and discovered that several people had specifically not voted for Conclave star Ralph Fiennes due to mistakenly thinking he'd already won an Oscar for Schindler’s List in 1993. Which...he didn't.
As the outlet put it, "Surprisingly, two separate voters who didn’t vote for Fiennes said they did not 'vote for him because he won before.'" When they learned of their error, one said “Oh shit!” Even more brow-raising? They both voted for Adrien Brody, who has won an Oscar before, for The Pianist in 2002.
Not surprisingly, people are unimpressed:
Oh, also there weren't "as many Chalamet voters that would suggest he’s brewing for an upset," but several voters did remark, “I know a lot of people who voted for him.”
Just FYI before we side-eye and move on, Variety notes that The Academy's "voting process is now entirely digital" and even involves two-factor authentication—meaning it's pretty hard for someone to "delegate their ballot to another person." So yep, these voters are making these mistakes all by themselves.
