Much like Austin Butler when he was haunted by the voice of Elvis, Ariana Grande sounds a lot like Glinda from Wicked lately. And she's a) well aware of that fact, and b) not upset about it in the slightest. Which, why would she be? Glinda is an icon.
The Golden Globe nominee spoke about her changing voice—and all the buzz surrounding it—during an interview with Variety, saying “I think that might stay. Galinda required a lot of vocal work for me. Certain things maybe won’t melt away. Some will, but I’m really grateful for the pieces that will stay with us forever.”
She went on to add, “What a beautiful thing to be left with, and to feel the ghost of every day.”
Turns out getting into the character of Glinda—and nailing her high register / sing-song voice—took months of work for Ariana, and obviously it's not that easy to shake off.
“Maybe people underestimate how long we spent finding and disappearing into these women,” she explained, speaking of her and Cynthia Erivo's character prep. “So when certain inflections or mannerisms take time to melt away, sometimes people poke fun. But we had a job to do, and we had things to get lost in—because that’s what the piece required.”
Fair enough!
