If you’ve recently joined the Gracie Abrams Hive and find yourself falling down a rabbit hole of endless interviews and performance videos, the next question on your mind is probably: Who is Audrey Hobert?
Day one Gracie fans know Audrey, the singer-songwriter, as her best friend as she constantly brings up her name in conversation and credits her for helping craft the intricate lyricism on her sophomore album, The Secret of Us. As Gracie and Audrey’s stars continue to rise, now seems like the perfect time to give a rundown on Audrey and their connection. Here’s everything we know about Gracie Abrams’s best friend, singer-songwriter Audrey Hobert.
Audrey graduated from New York University in 2021
According to Genius, Audrey graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2021 and worked as a writer’s production assistant at Warner Brothers until she decided to venture into songwriting.
She cowrote most of Gracie’s album, The Secret of Us...
What you probs already know: Gracie collaborated with The National’s Aaron Dessner and recorded much of her album at Long Pond Studios. What you might not know, however, that Audrey—who is a talented songwriter—has writing credits on the album too. Like, a lot of credits.
...including the hit song, “That’s So True”
In a December 2024 interview with NYLON, Gracie opened up about penning the track with her longtime best friend, saying, “It’s such an angsty, sarcastic song…Audrey and I were drunk on the roof, writing it in tears, laughing. The initial lyrics were way gnarlier.”
Side note: This isn’t the first time that Gracie has alluded to a more savage version of the song. While celebrating The Secret of Us (Deluxe) at an intimate Spotify soirée in L.A. (called “You’re Invited, I’m Sorry: An Evening with Gracie Abrams”), Gracie revealed there’s “a very vulgar version of ‘That’s So True’ that will never see the light of day.”
When Aubrey (who was also at the event) confirmed they were drunk when they wrote the lyrics, Gracie corrected her, saying they were “a little drunk in a great way—in a light, fresh way.”
Later, Gracie exclusively told Cosmopolitan how much she loved having Audrey join her at the event. “It felt so special to be able to spend time with some of the beautiful people who are generous enough to care about the album,” she said, “and the opportunity to be there with Audrey made the whole thing ten times sweeter.”
Oh, and in case you were wondering, Audrey also cowrote “Risk,” “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” “Blowing Smoke,” and “I Knew It, I Know You.”
She’s directed some music videos too
Audrey was heavily involved in the making of The Secret of Us, down to its music videos for “Risk” and “I Love You, I’m Sorry.” Peep the “Directed by Audrey Hobert” in the caption!
Audrey created a newsletter
In 2022, Audrey started writing her newsletter on Substack, Audrey Hobert (In Her Own Words), with diary entries, recommendations, and “ins and outs.” Consider us subscribed.
She’s dropping her own music too
That’s right. According to said newsletter, Audrey accidentally fell into becoming a singer-songwriter once she helped Gracie create The Secret of Us.
“I never wanted to be a singer. So tell me why I’m bout to be a singer? Tell me why I just slid effortlessly into being a singer?” she wrote in a March 26 entry.
On May 9, she’s dropping her debut single, “Sue Me,” via RCA Records. We are simply too seated.
