Due to loving a mess, the 2024 VMAs decided to ask Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, and Shawn Mendes to perform last night…which, yeah, makes sense since they all have new music out. But also, they were locked in a love-triangle (apparently?!), making for a somewhat awkward reunion.
Shawn probably said it best in the caption to his pre-VMAs Instagram:
Anyway! This dude performed a new song called “Nobody Knows,” which—as Us Weekly first reported—seems to reference his relationship with Camila thanks to lyrics like, “You’re an amateur drunk and everyone knows it / But fuck, you’re the one and I live for those moments / When the bottle is open, anything can happen / Flying too close to the sun.”
That “flying too close to the sun” lyric, in particular, seems to be a direct nod to Camila’s Instagram bio. Ahem: “long, thick black hair turned white from flying too close to the sun.”
Quick reminder: Camila and Shawn dated from 2019 to 2021, then Sabrina and Shawn dated after they broke up, and then Camila and Shawn kinda got back together? And broke up again? Either way, fans also think multiple lyrics from songs on Sabrina’s album Short n’ Sweet are about this whole thing. Examples:
