The Daily Mail reports that Prince William learned about Kate Middleton's cancer diagnosis ahead of his godfather's memorial service—which why he understandably pulled out of the event at the last minute.
The outlet reports that William found out about Kate's diagnosis "just moments before he was meant to attend King Constantine of Greece's memorial service and pulled out with just moments to go."
He cited "personal reasons" as the reason for not attending the memorial on February 27, while Kensington Palace said made a statement saying that Kate "continues to be doing well."
At the time, royal biographer Phil Dampier told the Daily Mail that "William only lives a stone's throw away, so it's very concerning" that he skipped the memorial, while commentator Richard Fitzwilliams says "William's non-appearance at the Memorial Service for his godfather King Constantine, the last king of Greece, owing to a personal matter is certainly unexpected."
Kate announced her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment on Friday, March 22, saying in a statement that she and William "have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family," noting that "it has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment."
She also added that it's "taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok. As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits."
