Do you self-identify as someone who loves a Taylor Swift Easter egg that borders on a conspiracy theory? Great, gather 'round! As you're obviously well aware, the singer announced her latest Tortured Poets Department bonus track, "The Albatros," during her February 23 show in Sydney. (Side note: Did you clock Tay literally dressing as an albatross at the Grammys? 'Cause that happened.)
And right afterward, she performed "Coney Island" with Sabrina Carpenter:
Meanwhile, fans managed to put a couple of things together in a way that's either genius or far-fetched depending on how Easter egg-y you're feeling at the moment.
Turns out, a fire was started by an employee upset over ~unrequited love~ at The Albatross Hotel on Coney Island in 1903, and it ended up burning down...the Bowery. Which, as we all know, is one-half of the pseudonym Joe Alwyn used on the songs he wrote with Tay (aka William Bowery). Plus, there's the fact that Taylor and Joe were spotted at the Bowery Hotel when they first started dating.
FYI, here's the full text of the story everyone's referring to, if you're interested!
This obviously adds more fuel to the theory that "The Albatross" is about Joe, but (!!) there are other nuggets of "evidence" as well. Like the fact that Merriam-Webster defines an albatross as "something that causes persistent deep concern or anxiety" and "something that greatly hinders accomplishment."
And the myth that an albatross flies for 6 years (the length of Taylor and Joe's relationship) without touching land.
I mean....
