Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas' split has taken an unfortunately dramatic turn due to the former couple disagreeing on where to raise their kids: the United States or the United Kingdom. While Joe wants the kids to stay in the U.S., Sophie says their family home is in the U.K.—and claims she and Joe were planning to move their family there.
In fact, Sophie just gave evidence to seemingly support her claims, providing the courts with a letter written by Joe to an Oxford homeowner regarding property they were hoping to purchase. (The letter was written on June 16, a few months before Joe filed for divorce.)
Page Six published portions of the letter, which include Joe writing, “When my wife and I decided we were going to spend more time in the U.K. and search for a permanent home, our daughter expressed three unwavering requirements: having chickens, a pony and a Wendy house. While many of the houses we viewed met this criteria, the moment we turned the corner and caught sight of the charming blue shutters adorning [redacted], we experienced a sense of magic unlike anything we had felt before.”
He also seemingly spoke about his intention to send the kids to school in England, saying, “I have been completely charmed by the idea of dropping my children to school on the boat and being able to spend a leisurely afternoon cruising to the pub with friends on my very own boat.”
Apparently, Joe and Sophie's offer to purchase the home was accepted, and they put down a deposit on July 7. Per Page Six, the court docs also include Sophie noting that their eldest daughter was enrolled in nursery and that she and Joe had shipped many their belongings to the U.K.
Meanwhile, a source told People, "They did not buy the house. The house is in escrow, the sale never closed."
The house purchase deal was allegedly supposed to be completed in December 2023 but is no longer happening because of the breakup. "They have never been residents of the U.K.," People's insider added. "Residency is a legal term and that is how the courts will define it. Residency includes things like where you have your driver’s license, where you vote, where your kids go to school, where you last lived as a family for a significant period of time (specifically 6 months)."
"There is no place the family lived for 6 months or longer other than Florida," the source concluded. "Intention, expressed in a letter or otherwise, does not equal residency. Actions do. And so while the letter was inserted in the motion in order to pique the attention of reporters, it won’t actually be material to determine legal residency."
TBD on if the letter Sophie submitted impacts things, but as of now Joe and Sophie have signed an "interim consent order" that prohibits them from removing their kids from New York state.
