Ice Spice is breaking her silence on distasteful comments made by Matty Healy earlier this year. The "Deli" rapper—who has been deemed the People's Princess by Stan Twitter—spoke to Variety about being the topic of conversation during Matty's appearance on The Adam Friedland Show podcast in February 2023. The main takeaway: She was "so confused" and, ultimately, unbothered.
"When I had heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused. Because I heard 'chubby Chinese lady' or some shit like that, and I'm like, 'Huh? What does that even mean?'" Ice told Variety. "First of all, I'm thick. What do you mean Chinese? What? But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn’t really care."
She then detailed a run-in with The 1975's frontman at SSENSE's Jean Paul Gaultier event during New York Fashion Week, where they seemingly squashed any bad blood. "But that's funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, 'Hey, you okay?' and I'm like, 'Of course.' He apologized to me a bunch of times. We're good."
Per Pitchfork, Matty and Adam made comments about Ice's body, called her dumb, and speculated about her ethnicity while mocking Chinese and Hawaiian accents. The episode has since been taken down from streaming platforms, and Matty attempted to apologize to Ice during a tour performance. "I don't want Ice Spice to think I'm a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I'm so sorry," he said on stage.
As for Miss Spice, she's casually building her empire. She dished about her friendships with Nicki Minaj and Matty's alleged ex, Taylor Swift, and how these relationships make her feel as a rising artist. "Sometimes I just wake up and I'm like, 'I'ma text Taylor' or 'I'ma text Nicki.' And then they be answering, and I'm like, 'Wow, that really makes me feel like that girl, for real,'" she said. "Them supporting me and just encouraging me gives me all the motivation I need."
