So, you've either just read a Ruth Ware book, are a fan of mysteries and crime thrillers, or you watched The Woman in Cabin 10 on Netflix. Either way, welcome! Ruth Ware is the pen name of author Ruth Warburton. The writer released several young adult fantasy books under Warburton, but when she moved on to her adult thrillers, she switched things up and went with Ware.
Ware's books are known for their Agatha Christie-style plots about women who find themselves at the center of mysterious crimes. Take The Woman in Cabin 10, for instance. A journalist reporting on a wealthy couple's charity foundation sees someone go overboard during a cruise on their superyacht... except no one else on board believes her. Dun-dun-dun!
If this sounds like your thing, you just might want to check out Ware's work—or continue your journey with her books, if you're already hooked. Read on to learn all about the British author's 15 novels.
Let's start with Ware's young adult books:
A Witch in Winter (2013)
A Witch in Winter is the first book in Ware's (or... Warburton's, technically, but we'll call her Ware for convenience sake) Winter Trilogy.
The book follows Anna, a teenager who finds out that she is a witch after moving to a new town with her father. It mixes romance and fantasy, as Anna uses a love spell on her crush, Seth, while also dealing with feuding witch clans. As one does.
A Witch in Love (2013)
The second book in the Winter Trilogy is A Witch in Love. This time Anna is attempting to suppress her powers, but it's not easy, and she begins being hunted down because of her identity. She also continues her relationship with Seth, and tries to learn more about her mother.
A Witch Alone (2013)
As you might gather from the title, Anna is dealing with heartbreak after her relationship with Seth ends in the third book in the trilogy. She continues to explore her mother's past and discover what it really means to hold the powers that she does.
Witch Finder (2014)
Witch Finder is the first book in the Witch Finder duology. It follows a teenage blacksmith in the 1880s named Luke, who is being initiated into an ancient witch-hunting society. Luke is ordered to hunt down a teen witch, Rosa, but finds the mission too difficult once he actually meets her.
Witch Hunt (2014)
The second book, Witch Hunt, continues Luke and Rosa's story as they are now both on the run together—Luke, because he failed to complete his witch-hunting mission, and Rosa, because she used her powers to get out of an arranged marriage.
And these are Ware's adult thrillers and mysteries:
In a Dark, Dark Wood (2015)
In a Dark, Dark Wood follows Nora, a woman who is surprised to be invited to her former best friend Clare's bachelorette party after they stopped communicating ten years earlier. The party is held in a remote home in the English countryside, and Nora and Clare have to confront their past as teenage friends and the fact that there seems to be a killer amongst them.
The Woman in Cabin 10 (2016)
The Woman in Cabin 10 is about Lo Blacklock, a journalist who is invited on a cruise by a wealthy couple in order to cover their latest philanthropic effort. But, after Lo sees a passenger go overboard, she's shocked to find out that no one else on the boat believes her.
The Lying Game (2017)
Four boarding school friends used to play the "Lying Game" where they would try to get people to believe their made up stories. Years later, one of the friends invites the others back to their school as a secret from their past resurfaces.
The Death of Mrs. Westaway (2018)
In The Death of Mrs. Westaway, a woman named Hal finds out that she has been left a large inheritance, which she desperately needs. The problem is: She seems to have received it by mistake. Hal decides to attempt to keep the money, pretending that she is actually related to the late Mrs. Westaway.
The Turn of the Key (2019)
Inspired by Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, Ware's The Turn of the Key is about a nanny for a wealthy family, who ends up imprisoned after one of the children dies. She maintains her innocence, but if she isn't responsible... who is?
One by One (2020)
A group of co-workers go on a retreat to a ski resort in One by One. It seems like a luxurious getaway at first, but an avalanche hits, and while the group is cutoff from the outside world, colleagues begin to disappear.
The It Girl (2022)
Years after Hannah's college best friend, April, is killed, everything Hannah thought she knew about the case is thrown into question. She finds out that her testimony may have caused an innocent person to be imprisoned for April's murder.
Zero Days (2023)
Zero Days is centered around a married couple, Jack and Gabe, who are professional computer hackers and assigned by companies to test their technology systems. But when Jack finds Gabe dead, she is accused of being the murderer. She attempts to escape the authorities, while also figuring out what's really going on.
One Perfect Couple (2024)
If One Perfect Couple sounds like the name of a reality show, that's because this book is about just that. Several couples take part in a reality show filming on an island, but a storm leaves them stranded with no way to contact the crew or anyone else. And, with this being a Ruth Ware book, of course bad and mysterious things start happening to them.
The Woman in Suite 11 (2025)
The Woman in Suite 11 is the sequel to The Woman in Cabin 10. Lo Blacklock returns, and this time, she is attempting to revive her journalism career after some time off. Once again, she's thrown into the world of the rich, covering the opening of a luxury hotel in Switzerland. But, things go awry when Lo meets a woman claiming to be the hotel owner's mistress.
